IC can be managed by a series of methods which are depending upon need of patient. Which option is feasible can rely on the basis of case to case basis, these including:

  • Diet and lifestyle—may help control symptoms and avoid flare-ups, but no specific recommendations can be made for everyone.
  • Antidepressants—may help relieve pain and decrease urinary frequency, as well as help ease depression that can result after months and years of living with IC.
  • Antihistamines—may act as sedatives and reduce anxiety as well as inhibit growth of cells in the bladder that cause inflammation.
  • Elmiron—this is the only medication approved by FDA for treating IC. It may help coat and protect damaged bladder walls.
  • Pain medications—(over-the-counter or prescription) may make symptoms more manageable and improve quality of life.
  • Direct instillation of liquid treatments into the bladder—may relieve most intense symptoms, at least temporarily.

Herbs that can be used to consider as a tea in any homemade formulations (in fact, the process is friendly for house hold use):

  • Gotu kola (Centella asiatica)— It enhances the integrity of connective tissue by stimulating production of glycosaminoglycans, which are an integral component of the protective mucous layer in the bladder.
  • Buchu (Barosma betulina)—A soothing diuretic and antiseptic for IC.
  • Cleavers (Galium aparine)—Long history of urinary tract tonic.
  • Corn silk (Zea mays)—Has soothing and diuretic properties in case of IC and other UTI.
  • Horsetail (Equisetum arvense)—An astringent and mild diuretic with tissue-healing properties.
  • Marshmallow root (Althea officinalis)—Has soothing demulcent properties. It is best taken as a cold infusion; soak the herb in cold water for several hours, strain, and drink.
  • Supplements

The antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E may be beneficial in treating IC. The patient should take vitamin E and vitamin B6 daily. Ascorbic acid is irritating to the bladder so vitamin C should be taken in the form of calcium ascorbate. Magnesium may be helpful in treating renal disease. Zinc may boost the immune system.

  • Homeopathic medicine also can be effective in treating IC. Choosing the correct remedy (based on the patient's symptoms) is always key to the success of homeopathic treatment. Homeopathic remedies

for IC include Spanish fly (Cantharis), sarsaparilla, stavesacre (Staphysagria), and Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium). The correct homeopathic treatment is effective within 12 hours.

  • Acupuncture also can be helpful tools in treating acute and chronic cases of IC especially when it is critical to manage pain by medicine. But the benefit is depending on the expertise of treatment procedure along with managing capability.
  • Emotional Free – high levels of stress hormones can trigger the release of excess inflammatory chemicals. In addition to prayer and meditation, can utilize to relieve anxiety/stress. It unblocks electrical pathways in the body for better communication between the body's cells.
