Addiction, Obsession, Commitment, and Recovery

  • Addiction - the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics.
  • Addicted - devoted or given up to a practice or habit or to something psychologically or physically habit-forming.
  • Addict - a person who is addicted to an activity, habit, or substance.
  • Recovery - the act or an instance in recovering: The process of being recovered.

There are many differing opinions regarding the topic of addiction. Indeed many observations show that there is a lack of understanding, compassion and tolerance towards the addict, those who are said to be un-naturally dependent, and it is often the case for families affected too.

It is a perplexing situation when the person said to be hooked finds out too late that there is a difficulty in the first place, but too late for whom? - The family, friends, work colleagues, or, most of all, the one absorbed themselves.

If you look at the dictionary definitions of the main topical terminology, you will see that there are numerous in common:

Addicted, situation, dependency, obsession, weakness. All these words are inducing the method of destroying a whole family unit, as support turns from those of great magnitude to the addicted person, to the substance controlling them, and the habit makes them dependent upon it. But it is not just the addict who suffers.

If you look at all the question words; what, why, where, when, who and how, they will befall eminent factors in the performance of renewal as there can't be a start platform until there are answers, but at the same time trying to get the answers involves a selected amount of allegiance from the addicted and the immediate affected people.

First of all there has to be admission. This can only come from the addicted, and it is very often the end of the road for any family or work life before the rehab operation can begin to put their lives back in sync again. Indeed, recovery is an on-going operation, for the rest of their lives, whatever the tendency. It will never go away, so understanding this is one of the first steps to renewal.

So, when does it develop into an addiction? Is it when it affects your own life or that of others? Does the habituated see it as a secured commodity, therefore can't see the hangup at all? There is a very fine line concerning accusation and the realisation that there is a dilemma in the first place. One of the first steps to healing is knowing that there is a challenge and this is the crucial moment where any good intentions could be destroyed if not handled in the correct method. It is a time to 'suggest' that there might be a predicament, to gently prime the addicted person into the right frame of mind in order to undertake any help being presented, and for them to be prepared to take the steps to do something about it. Medical and holistic addiction treatment will likely be necessary.

It is essential to keep an open mind and know the options open in the recovery procedure. In all of this, compassion rather than sympathy is essential. The addicted will feel guilt and may be tormented from a personality trouble either as a consequence of the inclination or from an transmissible aspect. So it has to be the strength of those willing and able to help, that gets them through. Although it has to be said that if the subject doesn't want or is unwilling to receive the help, then the whole procedure of recovery will be ineffective. It is also important to cite that it is by no means a cut and dry state of affairs. All concerned will have to be prepared for set backs, relapses and hard times to come, but there has to be willing participation from the habituated person before the long procedure can be started.

So, in order to start the improvement method for a comrade or loved on, what are the questions that need to be asked?

Who is affected? What is the predicament? I.E. Substance abuse, alcohol, eating complication etc. Why did it start? Eg. Control, image, self regard. Where is the first port of call for help? How do you handle the drawback?

Once the answers to all of the above are acknowledged, then the first gentle and tentative steps to recovery can start. Substance Abuse Treatment Center in California can assist with freedom from addiction, dual diagnosis, mental disorders, depression or the difficult effects of aging.
