ADHD – Discovering Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Posted: Jan 23, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

It was once thought that ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) was a disorder experienced almost exclusively by young boys. Today we know that this once unquestionable assumptions is false, especially if we are talking about the inattentive type of the condition.

Yes, it is true there are many more hyperactive boys driving their parent and schoolmates nuts, but when it comes to inattention the numbers seem to be about  equally split between boys and girls.

The early years put in place a solid foundation for future success

I recently read an article that emphatically proclaimed that ADHD is much more serious for adults. Many good points were made in the argument, some of which you will discover below, but from my perspective it is the school aged years that set the stage for either success or failure.

There was a recent study that the dropout rate for school children in a number of large municipalities in the United States is an amazing 35%, and even higher in a select few. One would have to wonder how many of these children were struggling with the primary ADHD symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and erratic behavior that eventually lead to low self-esteem, depression, frustration, loss of motivation, and finally giving up on themselves and their education.

Even the most ardent believer in the premise of the underdog over achieving would have to believe that for this group of high school dropouts the road ahead doesn't look all that bright. The chance of achieving the American dream is almost nil.

But what if a child with attention deficit disorder happens to muddle through school. How many will be able to get that coveted bachelor's degree and end up carving out a successful professional carrier?

*Only 12 percent of those with ADHD will earn a bachelors degree

*Only 4 percent will establish and maintain a professional career

Making the case that adult ADHD is more serious

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is all about problems with self regulation which can be translated into reckless impulsive behavior. This type of behavior might translate into quitting a job without thinking through the consequences, getting into trouble with the law, and drug or alcohol  addiction and abuse.

Additionally, the ADHD adult may not be able to manage their time effectively. This could lead to being predictably late for appointments, social events, and meetings. Attributes all of which look pretty bad on a job application.

The inattention part of attention deficit hyperactivity could translate into failure to complete important work related projects, losing focus in the middle of important meetings, and not being able to recollect the details of their latest work related assignment.

So which is worse?

Unbridled untreated ADHD creates a myriad of life challenges regardless of whether you are 2 or 82. Nevertheless, from my perspective it looks like childhood ADHD is worse simply because it gets in the way of acquiring the tools needed to succeed later in life. For those who insist that adult ADHD is worse I do understand but to me it seems they are putting the carriage in front of the horse hoping the horse will eventually figure it all out on its own.

What next? No matter what your age, or station in life, finding an effective treatment option is an important first step to overcoming the disorder. The most common forms of treatment are prescription stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and non-stimulant medications such as Intuniv or Strattera. While effective, all stimulant medications come with a number of serious label warnings.

The risk of side effects, or perhaps lack of success (30% of the time), has prompted many to consider  non-prescription options. A couple examples of these are behavior modification therapy and/or natural remedies. Natural remedies for ADHD are a side effect free way to address such problematic symptoms as inattention, distractibility, impulsivity, erratic behavior and hyperactivity and can be used both as a standalone treatment or as a compliment to other non-prescription alternatives. They also have been shown to produce long-term lasting benefits about half of the time.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders version 4 (DSM-IV) put out by the American Psychiatric Association in 1994, the official name is "Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder," (or AD/HD ADHD), although many people, and even some professionals, still incorrectly call it ADD or A.D.D. (The name given in 1980 but abandoned in 1994.)
