Two versions evolved making up agoraphobia definition.  The original definition states that agoraphobia is a kind of anxiety disorder pertaining to the intense fear of a wide open space. Originally, the word agoraphobia comes from the Greek word "agora" which simply means marketplace. Adding the word phobia then would give you "fear of marketplace" as the new definition. Therefore, this version of agoraphobia definition gives emphasis to the fear of an open space or a situation in which the person experiencing this would not want to be at.

In a while agoraphobia definition has also aligned with other known anxiety disorders such as social anxiety and panic attack with the advancement of avoidance behavior. The new evolution of agoraphobia definition apparently differ compare to the first one. The new version of agoraphobia definition implies that agoraphobia is a state of being attributed by the fear of breaking down the control of emotional and physical state caused by the ongoing panic attacks. As a result, they tend to fear being in a situation or place where panic attacks and escape may not be available or may be an embarrassment.

The extent of agoraphobia varies from one person to another. Some people with agoraphobia live normally by means of staying  away from any anxiety-provoking situations or to simply live away from places populated by too many people. As a result, they become relatively homebound or even bedbound, locking themselves just to avoid the feeling of intense fear. Some more severe cases would lead to madness and addiction, which effect later on would make them want to kill themselves.
