Helicobacter pylori, commonly referred to as H. pylori, is a microaerophilic gram-negative bacterium, usually found in various areas of the duodenum and stomach. H. pylori is the most common cause of ulcers throughout the world. One out of every six patients suffering from H. pylori infection has the possibility of developing an ulcer of the duodenum or stomach.

In what way does an H. pylori bacterial infection occur?

The exact transmission mode of an H. pylori infection is not yet known; however, it is a contagious disease and can spread from one person to another, predominantly through faecal contamination. One way the disease is spread is by drinking water contaminated with H. pylori. As soon as the H. pylori enters the mouth, it passes into the stomach and resides there.

The rate of H. pylori infection is very high in poorer socio-economic groups and under-developed countries, which are characterized by poor sanitary conditions, crowded living conditions and lack of clean water. In the Western world, infection is more associated with lower socio-economic groups.

Common symptoms of H. pylori bacteria:

In most cases, a person infected with H. pylori bacteria doesn't show any signs or symptoms. In the rest, H. pylori can cause stomach upset that leads to vomiting, burping, diarrhoea, anaemia, abdominal pain, chest pain, acid reflux and heartburn. In rare cases, H. pylori can cause urticaria, anxiety, fatigue, sinus problems, migraines and weight gain. In extreme cases, H. pylori bacteria can even lead to stomach cancer.

Treatment of H. pylori bacteria:

Currently, Triple Therapy treatment is considered the most effective treatment for an H. pylori infection. This involves the combined intake of drugs, such as amoxicillin, clarithromycin and metronidazole, with a proton pump inhibitor, for two weeks.

The second-line treatment for H. pylori involves taking levofloxacin for about 10 days. Doctors may also suggest certain dietary changes. Increasing the intake of Vitamin C can be very helpful.

It's a good idea to visit your doctor should you notice or experience any of these problems.
