Arch Supports: They Help More Then The Feet

When people think of arch supports, most think they are designed just to help the feet.  The reality, however, is that many other problems are the result of foot imbalances caused by arch failure.

When the arch of the foot isn’t functioning properly it can lead to an imbalance in the rest of the body.  It isn’t so much about having high arches, or “fallen” arches.  There are many people with high arches or low arches that have no problems at all.  The real problem in the function of the arch.

When there is disfunction in the arch of the foot it causes an unnatural movement of the foot, many times resulting in over pronation, where the foot rolls inward too far when we step.  This unnatural rolling of the foot can result in disfunction and pain not only in the foot and ankle, but also the knees, hips and low back.

Just because the foot doesn’t hurt doesn’t mean the problem doesn’t start there.  Many people with chronic knee, hip and low back pain never find a solution because most people, including doctors, only treat the symptoms where they reside.  Few ever look for the true underlying cause of the problem.

As such, the feet are usually ignored and are never properly diagnosed as the reason for the dysfunction.  Many times, the solution to these imbalances are orthotic arch supports or foot insoles.

If the feet are the cause of the problems, correcting the foot imbalance with proper support will eliminate the symptoms in the other joints.  By using orthotic arch supports to help the foot function properly, you will be bringing balance back to not only the foot, but ultimately to the knees, hips and low back.  When the body is in balance many of the joint pains you may be feeling will disappear.
