Initially the expression "sexual disease" used to mean both syphilitic and gonorrhealinfections, considered a single disease. In time, scientists have discovered that they are two different diseases and they have discovered as well other affections (more than 20) which can be transmitted sexually.

STDs are affections whose pathogen agents are transmitted through direct contact with the infected area or through the infected fluids of the body - vaginal secretions, sperm, and blood. The term is used in order to describe infectious affections transmitted especially by vaginal penetration, oral or anal and whose symptoms are mainly located in the genital area.

They are spread especially via sexual contact because they can be rarely spread through contact with the infected area, contact with infected objects or from mother to fetus. Symptoms are located especially in the genital area because they can be as well located in other areas like mouth, neck, eyes.

STDs can be classified in two broad categories:
Major STDs, like:
-syphilis
-gonorrhea

Minor STDs, which are:
-vaginal herpes
-venerian vegetations
-scab
-some forms of viral hepatitis

During the last decade, HIV infection, the most dangerous infection, as well as syphilis have caused unmatchable epidemics. In the genital area, symptoms are manifested by unusual secretions, pains in the pelvic area, burning feelings, pruritus, irritation feeling, pain while having sex or while urinating. The presence of these symptoms is not compulsory and some of them may even disappear, even if the infection persists inside the body until treating or until it becomes chronic.

The first step in treating STDs is medical examination and a correct diagnostic. Empiric treatment is not recommended, as well as treatment according to non authorized sources, as they may not be correct.

The risk to be infected with these diseases is higher in the case of sexual contact with more partners, when the condom is not used as means of protection or when intravenous injecting drugs are used, when the partner is drugged or has on his or her turn more sexual partners.

STDs can affect men and women as well, irrespective of their age. They can be contacted even if there are no symptoms. Actually symptoms may lack in the case of women. Besides their evolution is more dangerous in the case of women because it can provoke inflamatory pelvic disease which can sometimes lead to infertility.
