Causes And Effects Of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - STD Testing Centers Sacramento CA

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease  symptoms are a fever and lower abdominal pain. There might be a vaginal discharge and some period like bleeding between periods. PID symptoms often include lower abdominal pain, vaginal discharge, fever, pain during intercourse and irregular menstrual bleeding. PID associated with chlamydial infection may produce mild symptoms, however, or no symptoms at all. PID symptoms can mimic early menopause symptoms and thus a complete medical exam should be done to rule out PID when you have these types of symptoms. PID can be treated and cured, but the effects of a long standing infection may be permanent.

PID can cause scarring inside the reproductive organs , which can later cause serious complications, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility , ectopic pregnancy (the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in adult females), and other dangerous complications of pregnancy. Occasionally, the infection can spread to in the peritoneum causing inflammation and the formation of scar tissue on the external surface of the liver (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome ). PID can cause very serious problems. Scarring of the fallopian tubes is the most frequent one. PID can also result in the rupture of a fallopian tube.

PID can damage the fallopian tubes and tissues in and near the uterus and ovaries. Untreated PID can lead to serious consequences including infertility , ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy in the fallopian tube or elsewhere outside of the womb), abscess formation, and chronic pelvic pain. PID caused by chlamydia is typically "silent," that is, asymptomatic and of which the woman is unaware. It can cause permanent damage and often does because there are no warning signs. PID develops when bacteria (germs) get into a woman?s internal reproductive organs. There are a number of ways this can happen.

PID can lead to sterilization in females. Men may suffer from swelling of the testicles and penis. PID can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes, resulting in infertility in as many as 10 percent of women affected. In others, the scarring blocks the proper passage of the fertilized egg into the uterus. PID can lead to internal abscesses (pus-filled “pockets” that are hard to cure) and long-lasting, chronic pelvic pain. PID can damage the fallopian tubes enough to cause infertility or increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Pregnant women should consult a health care provider for appropriate examination, testing, and treatment, as necessary. Pregnant women should consult a health care provider for appropriate medications. Pregnant women infected with gonorrhea also are at higher risk of premature delivery. And when the infection is passed on to the infant, gonorrhea can cause serious eye infections.

Antibiotic resistance develops in bacteria over time since bacteria are able to mutate, or change, into forms that can survive despite the administration of drugs meant to kill or weaken them. The development of antibiotic resistance can make it difficult to treat some conditions effectively with antibiotics. Antibiotic treatment, if taken exactly as directed, normally cures gonorrhea infections. If antibiotics are not taken properly, the infection will not be cured.
