Chlamydia: Causes, Treatment And Cure - Columbus

Chlamydia is most common in people under 25 years of age. The disease  is very easy to pass on.

Chlamydial infection of the cervix can spread to the rectum. Chlamydia in women can infect the cervix and urinary tract and can cause pelvic inflammatory disease when it reaches the fallopian tubes. It can also pass through bodily fluid and from the mother to her fetus. It's imperative that the mother get tested so that her baby is not born with infections. In men chlamydia can infect the urinary tract and the epididymis causing swelling or inflammation of the testicles.

Causes

Chlamydia can also cause eye infections (conjunctivitis). Chlamydia can also cause fertility problems in men. Approximately half of all men with symptoms have impaired fertility, such as epididymitis. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that can be transferred through oral, anal and vaginal sex. In 2006 alone, more than 1,000,000 cases of chlamydia was reported to the CDC.

Chlamydia infects the cervix (neck of womb), the urethra (tube that drains urine from the bladder) and the rectum (back passage).

Chlamydia can affect the mother and child during pregnancy . Chlamydia can cause early labor and delivery and can be passed from mother to baby during birth. Chlamydia infection also increases the risk of contracting HIV . Women with chlamydia are up to 5 times more likely to contract HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. Chlamydia screening is a wise precaution for all sexually active women. An annual screen for women up to the age of 25, and older women with a new sex partner or multiple sex partners.

Treatment And Cure

Chlamydia can be easily treated and cured with antibiotics. It is important to make sure your sex partner(s) also receives treatment in order to prevent getting infected again. Chlamydia symptoms may only appear in the morning and may be mild, especially for men. That's why many people do not realize they have an infection. Chlamydia can be transmitted from an infected mother to her child, if it is a vaginal birth. Like any other STD, the chances of chlamydia are higher, as the number of sex partners increases.

Permanent complications of Chlamydia in men are less common than in women, but can include permanent pain during orgasm, or rarely, infertility.
