Do I Have Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease. Any type of sexual contact may spread Chlamydia. The bacterium which causes this infection is called chlamydia trachomatis.  This is an easily treatable disease if treated at an early stage. If allowed to progress, it can cause serious damage.

In women, symptoms may include- burning during urination, discharge from vagina, lower back or abdominal pain, pain during sexual contact, and bleeding between the menstrual cycles. In men, the symptoms may be- burning pain during urination, discharge from genitals, swollen testicles or pain in testicles. Chlamydia is highly contagious and can be passed during vaginal, anal and/or oral sex.

To prevent or reduce your chances of contracting chlamydia:

1. Use latex condoms

2. Do not have multiple sexual partners

3. Get regular screening done for all the STDs.

If chlamydia is not treated, it can lead to other more serious diseases in both men and women. Some other complications are:

1. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease in women. This is an infection of the reproductive organs of women and can lead to infertility.

2. Reiter's Syndrome causes three seemingly unrelated problems- urinary tract problems, arthritis and redness in the eyes.

Because chlamydia is a bacteria, The treatment for is with common antibiotics. You will be required by the doctor to take these antibiotics for a certain period of time at a regular dosage. While undergoing treatment for chlamydia, you should not engage in any sexual activity with another partner. If you have sex while you are taking treatments for chlamydia, you could very easily infect that person who will, in turn, refinfect you, and your treatment will not work.

It is best to abstain from sex during your treatments.

After your treatments are finished, you should be cured and the best way to prevent reinfection is to faithfully use latex condoms during sex.

Some alternative at-home treatments for chlamydia can be very effective as well. This makes a lot of sense since chlamydia is not a new disease. Chlyamydia has been around for many, many years. It was called the "old man's disease", when I was a teenager. The reason it was called this is because young girls who had sexual relations with older men were very susceptible to the disease.
