Enlarged Prostate: Examination, Treatments And Symptoms

Understanding enlarged prostate symptoms is important to keep you healthy. When an individual stops growing, the prominent changes that happen in the body will end as well. Then, the aging process starts and, once again, changes happen both internally and externally. For middle-aged men, maintaining the health of the prostate is one important thing that should be considered. In relation to the function of the prostate and its location, a healthy prostate condition is linked to the health of both the reproductive system and the urinary system.

In some cases, the prostate becomes enlarged as men grow older. In fact, the risk of enlarged prostate is higher the older a man gets. The prostate is located surrounding the bladder and thus, common enlarged prostate symptoms are normally related to the bladder where the enlarged prostate gland will press against it. As the prostate enlarges furthermore, the pressure increases, and the bladder starts showing common enlarged prostate symptoms, such as difficulty to start urinating, problem to completely empty the bladder, and in several occasions, uncontrollable small releases of urine.

Other common symptoms are pain with urination and ejaculation, increased urinary frequency, low back and abdominal pain, and blood during urination or ejaculation. Some people also report that they have problems to achieve and maintain an erection as well as facing difficulty to ejaculate. If you are experiencing these symptoms of enlarged prostate, then you should get yourself checked out as soon as possible.

Prostate examination

All these enlarged prostate symptoms should be examined carefully to determine the severity of the problem. Men over the age of fifty are recommended to undergo regular prostate examination. This is an excellent time to tell the doctor about any enlarged prostate symptom that you feel so he can perform a prostate examination to determine the source of the problems. Prostate examination is not an invasive procedure and generally it only involves inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into the anus for an internal examination. After the doctor has completed the procedure, he will address the symptoms that you experience.

The important thing is that if you experience those symptoms, you should consult with your doctor immediately to find what the problem exactly is. The symptoms may only indicate a natural enlarged prostate condition, but they can also indicate the development of dangerous condition like prostate cancer. Avoiding necessary prostate examination can lead to death so do not procrastinate and take necessary prostate tests. If you know what you are dealing with, then you can make a sound decision about the treatment that you will take.

Enlarged prostate treatments

There are two types of medication considered as an effective enlarged prostate treatment. The first is an alpha blocker used to relax the wall of the bladder so you can urinate easier. Study showed that this medication works in approximately seventy-five percent of men. After you take the medication, you should notice an improvement of the enlarged prostate symptoms within the first few days.

The second type of medications is finasteride. The medication has a proven track record to shrink the prostate although sometimes it needs up to one year to give the desired results. You should consult your doctor before taking any medication and this usually depends on how big the enlarged prostate is.

Another alternative treatment is to use some kind of herbal treatment. Saw palmetto is a famous herbal alternative for enlarged prostate. It has been tested and it shows promising end result. Study indicated that you should start noticing an improvement within three months. If you do not notice any difference then you should consider other treatments. Surgery is another enlarged prostate treatment and although it has become less common, it is still considered as an effective treatment. Normally you will need to be hospitalized and let some recovery time if you select this enlarged prostate treatment.

Enlarged prostate and prostate cancer

Enlarged prostate symptoms overlap with those of prostate cancer, but you should remember that an enlarged prostate is not a certain indicator that you are suffering from prostate cancer. Usually it is difficult to detect prostate cancer through a rectal examination because it needs to have a considerable size. In many occasions, prostate cancer is diagnosed through blood tests. When you understand the differences between these two conditions, you can become less worry rather than following the common misunderstanding saying that it indicates the presence of cancer. If you experience enlarged prostate or prostate cancer symptoms, you should consult with your doctor and undergo necessary tests.

Even if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, you should not feel that this is the end of the world. Nowadays, there are various treatments that you can use to get rid the cancer. Recent treatment methods have become more effective than what were available some years ago. You should feel positive and assured that the cancer can be cured and gotten rid of.
