Faith Based Programs For Drug Addiction Treatment - How Real Are They?

Some call it the ultimate con since the centuries, some call it the best alternative to regular medicine, but faith based programs have borne the brunt as well as gathered the bouquets since the early sixties. Faith based programs owe their success and popularity to the birth of Alcohol Anonymous, the single most successful de-addiction program back in the sixties.

With the birth of the successful de-addiction programs, there were several wannabes that hitched the bandwagon of de-addiction. While some faded away in some time, there are some de-addiction programs that have stood the test of time, like faith based programs. The spiritual and faith based programs have sprung up with the concept of Alcohol Anonymous at its base. The crux of these de-addiction programs are the twelve points in the Alcohol Anonymous program. The faith based programs have a strong spiritual based approach, which works for some while some may find it to be too religious for their liking.

Of course, whether you wish to take the faith based programs for drug addiction treatment seriously or not is entirely your lookout. But do these programs mean something? Do they have anything special as compared to the other de-addiction programs? More importantly, are they harmful for our psychology or for our body?

Conceptually, a faith based program should work like the wheel, but sadly there are quite a few people out to make a quick buck that give a bad repute to the entire business of de-addiction, not only just faith based alcohol treatment programs.

Faith based programs for drug addiction treatment are based on igniting the faith in a person, the belief may be whatever they believe in. the faith based programs basically deem that a person should turn to a higher power than themselves to release themselves of the addiction that they are in. It also says that the strength and support required coming out of the predicament lies with the higher power.

Once the patient is convinced that the treatment is right for them, they are invited to the twelve step program. The first steps are all about introducing them about their problem and their acceptance. The later parts are all about calling out the power that they believe in, so that they can help them in their condition.

Later on, it would also include their guilt about the error of their ways, like how they have gone away from the way of the divine with their addiction. The program tells them that they have to make amends to the people that they have hurt.

Mostly, the patients undergoing the faith based programs will have a mentor who takes them through all the twelve steps that would help to combat their addiction. With the help of the mentor, they can actually go ahead and make amends for anything that they have done wrong while they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They can also embark on a journey to meet the people whom they have hurt while they were inebriated. This acceptance of doing a mistake is quite important, because only after a person accepts their mistakes and shortcomings, they will be able to ensure that they will not commit the same mistake anymore.

Whether these programs work or not work depends on several factors. If a person is not religious and spiritual to start with, they would require a massive amount of work to accept some divine power that is above them. Then again, whether they need to be taken through the whole rigmarole of spiritual treatment when other, better types of de-addiction programs are available, is something that is up for discussion.

And of course, the most important aspect is detoxification. While detoxification is the most important aspect of the traditional de-addiction procedure, some spiritual based programs do not include detoxification. Detoxification is considered as the crux of any de-addiction activity. It can be said safely that any de-addiction program without a proper detoxification program in its rolls is something that has more chances of not working than working.

Therefore, it can be said that a spiritual de-addiction program depends completely on the addict and his or her thoughts and behavior. There are other types of de-addiction programs that are available in every part of the world, and going through a spiritual de-addiction program when so many options are available may not be the best idea.

Then, a spiritual de-addiction program for drug addiction treatment has quite an amount of prayer involved. That is all right for people who are actually of a religious bent of mind, but those who do not have a religion in their mindset will consider the time to be as a waste of time.
