FAQ's on Food Recipes for Diabetics

A lot of my patients throughout my years of experience have asked me similar questions with regard to food recipes for diabetics. My patients, after being diagnosed with diabetes (usually type 2 diabetes), are required to undergo a well-balanced and controlled diet to prevent themselves from getting further risks.

In order to answer your questions on food recipes for diabetics, I have compiled these frequently asked questions to hopefully guide you.

What are the important factors to consider when trying out recipes?

For diabetics, it is important to consider the amount of calories, carbohydrates, fiber, and salt that you take in for every meal. Thus, for each recipe, count the calories that you will be taking in, as well as those other factors so that you know what you are putting in your body.

What kind of carbohydrates should I take?

Eat foods that are full with complex carbohydrates and avoid those with simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are digested slowly so that you can have a more balanced absorption of glucose into your cells. On the other hand, simple carbohydrates are easily broken down so you might have an influx of sugar in your blood stream.

What are some examples of foods with complex carbohydrates?

Try brown rice, whole grain foods (like wheat bread and cereals), fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and legumes (like nuts and beans).

What is the role of fiber in this diet?

Fiber helps in digestion as it helps move the food along the intestines and puts bulk into stool to allow for easier passing through the bowel.

What are some examples of fibrous foods?

There are a lot of fibrous foods such as bran products, whole grain products (like wheat bread), and fresh fruits. Tea has also been dubbed as full of fiber depending on the kind of leaves or herbs used.

How can salt affect a patient with diabetes?

Salt can affect the occurrence of risks like heart diseases and high blood pressure, so as much as possible it is better to keep sodium intake low. Eliminate or decrease salt intake by avoiding salty food such as canned and processed meat.

How can I look for food recipes for diabetics?

As long as you keep in mind the basics of diabetes diet, you will not find it hard to experiment on food recipes. You can also consult books and websites for specific recipes that are friendly for diabetics.
