Foods to Avoid with Acid Reflux - Know Them and Prevent Acid Reflux

Basically, the condition is exacerbated by certain foods that you choose to eat. Acid reflux or GERD is a major digestive problem that involves the malfunctioning of the stomach and inevitable damage to the esophagus.

The best way to solve the problem is to be aware of what foods to avoid with acid reflux. As you would expect, however, most people take over-the-counter drugs to quickly relieve the pain and discomfort.

Acid reflux is caused by regurgitation of the undigested content of the stomach. When the food enters the stomach, it needs to be broken down or fully digested by the liquid content and enzymes in the stomach. This allows the food to be dispersed amongst other parts of the body for productivity.

Food that is not broken down properly causes the acid to travel back into the esophagus. Eventually, the acid builds-up, causing irritation to the lining of the esophagus. It becomes inflamed and painful. The first sign of GERD is usually heartburn.

Yet, you may experience other frequent painful and annoying symptoms such as regurgitation, belching, chest pain, dysphagia, and/or bloating. All of these may last for several months at a time if not treated properly. They may also reoccur after a week’s time.

Yes, it is imperative to choose an acid reflux diet and exercising to loose weight. But, people must also understand that the root of the problem stems from eating too much; especially during dinner induces excess stomach acid production. Therefore, you should eat small meals and take a break between bites.

Healthcare professionals suggest that you wait at least three hours after meals before lying down. Furthermore, you should wait 30 minutes after eating to drink 1 gallon of lukewarm water to dilute the acid. When lying down, be sure that your head is raised 6-8 inches.

Avoid foods that are highly acidic to assist with proper digestion. Specifically, the stomach’s acid and enzymes should be able to fully breakdown the foods to eliminate the reoccurrence of the symptoms.

1. sodas that contain caffeine
2. chocolate
3. peppermint
4. spicy foods
5. fatty/fried foods
6. citrus foods
7. tomato-based foods

Living a healthy life-style, to include a healthy diet will limit the chances of the condition reoccurring. More so, it is important to exercise as this is a sure way to help with loosing weight. Obesity is one of the major contributors to the development and enhancement of acid reflux. So, it is imperative that you know the foods to avoid with acid reflux, when you should eat, and exercise to loose weight in order to live a healthier life.
