Got Acne? The 7 Big Myths That Will Waste Your Time In Getting Rid of Acne!

Posted: May 16, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Even though the scientific facts about acne can be found just about anywhere you go, there still is no getting around one major fact, that there are still to this very day myths. In fact there are seven key myths that continue to circulate about acne and this is probably one of the big reasons why people sometimes find it difficult for them to combat their acne. Although some may have a tiny bit of truth to them, most of what they explain in their myths are unrelated to the true cause of the acne in the first place. So in order to treat your acne properly it's important that you are aware of the the seven most common myths about acne.

Myth #1 – Tanning and Sunbathing Cures Acne

OK, what happens here is that simply the skin when it tans becomes darker and will give a temporary concealment of the redness which is caused by the acne. But it is also going to leave your skin very dry and also can irritate the skin. There is no scientific link that can be found between being exposed to the sun and the prevention of acne. The worst part of this myth is that if a person tans too much and gets too much exposure from the sun they are going to only increase their chances of getting skin cancer. So no matter what, it's important that you wear a water based sunscreen, one that won't clog the pores and will still protect you from the harmful rays of the sun.

Myth #2 – Greasy and Fatty Foods Cause Acne

You know you've heard this one before, probably when you were growing up. The advice to stay away from greasy and fatty foods is good advice but not for the reason stated here. There are scientific studies that prove that there is no food in particular including greasy and fatty foods that will actually cause acne. However, there may be some truth that some foods might make the acne worse, but here again, they don't cause the acne. So if you have acne and you eat a certain food and notice that the acne gets worse, it's probably a good idea to consider avoiding that food to see what happens.

Myth #3 – If You Wash Your Face Often It Will Stop Breakouts

It is true that if you wash your face you are going to help get rid of dirt and oil that tends to get in your pores, but having poor hygiene is not the actual cause of pimples or acne. It is the oil that mixes together with the dead skin cells left behind that clogs pores that attracts the bacteria that causes the acne. So, if you stick to washing your face with a mild soap just twice a day this should be sufficient.

Myth #4 – If You Wear Make Up You Will Get Acne

Well truth be known, in some cases it is true that wearing make up will cause acne but that is only because the make up is just clogging the pores even more. So the best way to avoid this problem is to simply use a make up that is noncomedogenic or water based so that it will not clog your pores. The truth is that some make up will even contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and this will actually help to treat the acne.

Myth #5 – Having Sex Will Cause Acne

OK, this is probably the weirdest one of all but it does exist and was started back in the 17th century to help to discourage people from having sex before they got married. But in reality, sex has absolutely no connection with outbreaks of acne. Although, the hormone testosterone and too much of it can help aid in breakouts and this is part of the reason why teen boys seem to have bad cases of acne in their early years. However, just because this myth is busted shouldn't make you feel like you should go out and have sex any time you feel like it.

Myth #6 – Squeezing Your Pimples is Going to Make Them Go Away Faster

Well, this technique might make the pimples seem less noticeable but it sure isn't going to make them go away any quicker. In fact the truth is that they will stay longer. When you pop the pimples this only aggravates matters and can cause the bacteria to spread even further by pushing all of the dead skin cells around with the oil and even could push this farther into the skin. This is also a good way to scar your skin. So this is really not advisable.

Myth #7 – Use Acne Medication Every Single Day to Avoid Breakouts

Although it is probably true that while you are battling an outbreak that you might be directed to use the acne medication each day in order for the medication to work. It's after the breakout is gone that you need to cut down on the use and use other measures to keep your face clean and free from acne. By continuing to use these items daily is only going to dry out your skin and cause irritation to the skin.

Understand that it is the sebaceous glands that are over producing oil and combining with the dead skin cells that are the culprits in the creation of acne. It's when these two get together in the pores and then attract the bacteria and get trapped in the pores is when there will be an outbreak of acne and for no other reason.
