Gout is Getting Younger

Posted: Jul 30, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Since the past few decades, the number of people suffering from gout or hyperuricemia (high blood uric acid) is growing at an alarming rate. The number of gout attack cases has increased rapidly as this notorious problem spread towards the younger generation.

In the ancient times, gout only happens to the people from the noble and rich class of the society. As the world progresses and the quality of life of mankind gradually improved, the occurrence of all sorts of modern diseases increased as well, gout is just one of them.

Previously, we only heard of people suffering from gout attack in their 40s or 50s, but now the age group of gout patients is getting younger and younger. It is becoming common among the 30-year olds and is creeping towards the 20s. There are cases of teenagers getting their first gout attack when they are still in high school.

Something is going very wrong here. It is predictable. You can see the correlations between the trends. This problem of gout is proportional to the level of development of a population group. Here is one interesting fact, the percentage of gout patients in a particular population is very close to the percentage of fast food coverage for that population.

Hyperuricemia or gout is mal-nutritional disease. Some people will disagree with that statement by saying that he or she is living in the world of abundance, how can it be mal-nutrition? Yes, you might have more than enough food to eat, but those are mainly protein and carbohydrate based food. May be I should say gout is an "Over nutritional" disease.

Look at our kids nowadays! Almost all of their meals are made of processed food! From the milk and cereal breakfast to the fried chicken lunch in the school, and the happy meal dinner, plus the chips and soda during the TV show or computer game sessions.

Very often, the parents themselves are having the same diet. And they will try to convince themselves that they are actually having a balanced diet because there are some vegetables in the dish or inside the hamburgers. How can one say it is a balanced diet when there is only lest than 5% of fresh vegetables or fruits in their meals?

The trend of gout getting younger will only become worse in the coming years as the fast food companies are spending more on media advertising to influence the mind of the younger generations. Soon, the kids will reject healthy meal (vegetables and fruits) as it is not something trendy for them. Perhaps someday there will be a popular rap song entitle "Gout Romance".
