Cracked lip corners can be extremely painful. Indeed, although small, the cracks, blisters and scabs which can appear at the corners of the mouth can be excruciatingly painful and their size often belies just how bad they can feel!
Known as angular cheilitis, this condition is surprisingly common. Although it is most common the the elderly and in younger children, it can appear in anyone, regardless of age. It is not always simple to determine exactly what has caused the cracked lip corners in every case. However, there are a number of common factors which can make it much more likely.
Excess moisture leaking out of the mouth edges often triggers the condition. For others, it could be pen-sucking or finger biting. In a smaller number of cases, it can be brought about by nutritional deficiencies-particularly Vitamin B12 and Iron. The almost constant moisture causes the skin to crack and split. This area then becomes infected as the damp, moist conditions are a perfect environment for the growth of bacteria and fungal infections. Once this takes hold, it is extremely difficult to eradicate completely.
Fortunately, there are a few simple angular cheilitis treatment options to ease the cracked lip corners. In very mild cases, these may be sufficient to calm the area down, but if the condition has persisted for more than a couple of days, it is likely that an infected has taken hold and you may need to take appropriate action.
If badly fitting dentures are an issue, measures should be taken to have these corrected and with appropriate treatment, the condition should disappear. To prevent pen and finger biting, paint the ends of pens or fingernails with bitter "anti-nail-biting" solution which is readily available from pharmacies. If you feel the condition could have been brought about by deficiencies on Iron or Vitamin B12, low-cost supplements are available if recommended by your doctor. If the angular cheilitis is relatively mild, you can get relief by applying a layer of petroleum jelly or unperfumed lip balm on the cracked lip corners.
