How to Avoid Serious Eye Problems That Can Ruin Your Life

Although sports and physical activities are good for you, these things could also cause injuries, especially if you are not careful and not using proper gear and equipment. Aside from broken bones, muscle sprains and aches, eye injuries are also quite common in sports. In fact, figures show that over 40,000 sports-linked injuries to the eyes happen every year. Nevertheless, majority of sports-related wounds and injuries do not really result in permanent physical damage, in fact, they often heal perfectly on their own. However, it is important to note that when it comes to your eyes, some injuries can cause visual loss that can be irreversible.

Two Major Types Of Eye Injuries

1. Blunt Trauma

A blunt trauma to the eye is an injury that is caused by an object hitting or crashing onto the eye. This is the most common type of eye injury. The severity of this problem, however, is dependent on the speed, size or hardness of the thing that hit the eye.

The common result of a blunt trauma is actually a black eye. However, if the object that hit your eye is bigger than the eye socket, the bone structure surrounding the area might be affected. In fact, if the impact is quite strong, it could result in serious bone fracture. On the other hand, if the object is smaller than the orbit, the area that would be affected will be the inner parts of the eye.

Aside from black eye and fracture, blunt trauma could also end in other conditions, such as inflammation, internal bleeding, retinal detachment, rupture of the eyeballs, and even optic nerve damage.

2. Blunt Injuries

Basically, a blunt injury happens when an object penetrates or pokes the eye. However, this is fairly uncommon. Most of the time, blunt injury can be caused when eyeglasses or eye protectors break while being worn or when a finger and sharp objects pierce the eye. Usually, your cornea can get scratched, called corneal abrasion, in an injury like this. Or you can also have lacerations in the eyeball or eyelid.

The treatments or medications needed for eye injuries are dependent on the severity and location of the problem. If you are lucky, the injury can be fully repaired by surgery or medication. However, there are times when blindness is inevitable.

Suggested Eye Protection Gear

According to experts, about 90% of eye injuries can actually be prevented by wearing protective gear and equipment. Aside from preventing incidence of eye injuries, protective eyewear can also minimize the severity of injuries.

If you are wearing contact lenses or eyeglasses, you are more susceptible to injuries. Glasses could break and the shards could pierce your eyes. Shattered contact lenses might bring damage to your eyes too. The American Society for Testing and Materials, which is the one responsible for making and developing protective eyewear for different types of sports, suggests that you use eye protectors made from polycarbonate material.

Goggles made from polycarbonate lenses are the most common protective eyepieces that you could wear for majority of sports. In fact, you will see professional swimmers, bikers and even basketball players using this gear. Polycarbonate is a strong material that lessens the impact of an object and also provides ultraviolet protection.

Since children are more prone to eye injuries than adults, it would be wise to let your kids or siblings wear protective eyepiece before they indulge in sports. Kids are not really aware of the consequences of eye injuries, so they may not be very careful when it comes to protecting their eyes.

For adults, the most common types of eye problems involve puffy eyes, wrinkles and skin discoloration. For such aesthetic concerns, you can use a high-quality eye cream such as Eyelastin. If you want to know more about this product, you can visit http://www.eyelastin.com/.
