There are many degrees of hearing loss. There are also many different causes. If you want to protect yourself from going deaf, you need to educate yourself on these causes and how they can be prevented.
Hearing Loss Causes
It is important to know what causes hearing loss. This is actually the first real step to prevention.
- Some cases of deafness are hereditary. Some people may also lose their hearing if their mothers were severely ill during pregnancy.
- Being too particular about ear cleanliness can be harmful for you. Using cotton buds too frequently can injure the ear or push the ear wax deeper into the ear, thereby increasing your risk of hearing loss.
- Sounds and music that are too loud are obvious causes of hearing loss. You can find more of these in concerts, home entertainment systems and in certain work areas.
- Diseases like meningitis and ear infections can all lead to hearing loss.
- The ears can age just as well as the rest of the human body. Older people therefore may naturally lose a bit of their ability to hear clearly.
- Not wearing protection and not knowing how to dive properly or execute some water sport routines can lead to damage of the ear.
Hearing Loss Prevention
There are ways to stop the causes for hearing loss. Here are some of them:
- If you have a job that puts you at risk of damaging your hearing, you should wear the right protection. This may include ear muffs or ear plugs. You should also wear protection if you are a water sport athlete.
- Turn down the volume on your television, MP3 and DVD player. Schedule some days when you don't listen to loud sounds at all.
- Clean only the outer areas of your ear. If you feel tempted to dig deep for some ear wax, then ask an expert to do it for you.
- Make sure you and your kids have all the shots you will need for infections. If you have a baby in the family, make sure she has been screened and goes to the doctor for regular check ups.
- Include your ears in your schedule for regular check ups. This will allow you to both check early signs of wearing in your ears and choose the right intervention for it.
- Don't do more than you are able or allowed to in your water sport of choice. Diving in particular requires training and careful attention to instructions to prevent ear injury.
It's not fun to experience any of the degrees of hearing loss. If you don't want an impaired sense of hearing, then make sure you follow these basic tips.
