Mastoiditis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Definition
Mastoiditis can be define as a a bacterial inflammation or infection of the air cells in the bony skull behind the ear region. Mastoiditis is generally a ramification of a middle ear infection . The infection may moved from the ear to the mastoid bone of the skull. The mastoid bone, which is a part of the temporal bone. The mastoid include air cells that drain the middle ear.The mastoid bone fills with infected materials and its honeycomb-like shape may degenerate. Mastoiditis is generally occurred by untreated middle ear infection and used to be a leading cause of death in children.Mastoiditis can be a small infection or can develop into life threatening complications. With the development of antibiotics ,it is a relatively uncommon and much less dangerous symptom. It is cured with medications and/or surgery. If untreated, the infection can moved to surrounding regions, including the brain , producing serious symptoms .
Causes
Mastoiditis is generally a cause of inflammation of the middle ear infection into the mastoid air cells. A child have mastoiditis generally has a exposure of having a recent ear infection or has middle ear infections that continue to reoccur. The risk of mastoiditis is mitigate with the use of antibiotics for ear infections. Mastoiditis may be produced by number of other bacteria's.
Mastoiditis can also appear in combination with chronic ear infection. Chronic ear disease has long been connected with a sclerosed "cue - ball" like mastoid which is little exposedto demineralization.
Haemophilus influenzae & Streptococcus pneumoniae are those kinds of bacteria which cause middle ear infections & produced mastoiditis. There are other bacteria as well such as Pseuodomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Fusobacterium, Klebsiella , Escherichia coli , Proteus, Prevotella,Porphyromonas , and Bacteroides. The procession of an uncured, or undertreated, middle ear infection may result mastoiditis.
Symptoms
There are some common symptoms of mastoiditis are tenderness & pain in the mastoid region, & swelling. There may be an ache localized in the middle or inner ear , and the ear or mastoid area may be red. Experience of mild fever or headaches . Infants generally show nonspecific symptoms, such as loose bowels , anorexia or irritability . Drainage from the ear appears in more complex conditions.
Symptoms of mastoiditis may include:


  • Pain behind the temporal region

  • Ear swelling

  • Erythematous

  • Ear infection

  • Fever

  • Irritability

  • Redness of the bone behind the ear

  • Drainage from an ear

  • Ear pain

  • Headache


Treatments
It may be difficult for the doctors to treat mastoiditis because mastoid bone exist in deeper area of the ear. It need long-term treatment to feel healthy again. Doctors recommended antibiotics by injection to get the efficacious results.
In some conditions where antibiotic medications are not successful , There surgery remains the best treatment to cure . By removing part of the bone and drain the mastoid via surgery.
The primary treatment for mastoiditis is prescribed to use antibiotics such as ticarcillin , clavulanate & ciprofloxacin, gentamicin.It is recommended to take continual treatment of anti biotic to completely finish the infection.
