The painful inflammation of a bursa is called bursitis. It's caused by bumping or bruising, repeated pressure, or overuse. Though bursitis is associated with physical activity, you don't have to be an athlete to develop the condition. Anytime you exercise too strenuously, especially after laying off your workout for a while, you can aggravate bursitis.

You can also have bursitis problems if your work or hobbies require repetitive physical movements, especially lifting things over your head. And sometimes bursitis can just flare up for no good reason.

A mixture of alfalfa, chaparral, and comfrey diminishes soreness and eases inflammation.

Apply a cloth soaked in comfrey or mullein tea directly to the affected area. Repeat often.

Add 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper to 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and bring to a boil. Simmer for 15 minutes. Dip a cloth in the liquid and apply to the affected area as a poultice. Rub the area with warm olive oil before applying to the skin.

Sea water has been reputed to cure chronic bursitis. Drink daily. Buy the sea water from a local health food store. Caution: Do not use this recipe if you have high blood pressure.

Emu oil contains high level of linolenic acid. This acid is said to have good effect on bursitis as it works on muscle and joint pains. The linolenic acid is said to be having anti-inflammatory effect which penetrates into the skin and provides the relief. This is one of the best home remedies for bursitis.

Soak a cloth in mullein tea and apply it on the affected area. Repeat this process at regular intervals. To reduce pain and inflammation, apply ice to the affected area. To prevent stiffness, apply lobelia oil to the affected joints. Chamomile, hops, and skullcap tea promotes healing process.

For natural home remedies, the kitchen is a great place to start. It has almost all the medicines you would possible need at least, to deal with common ailments. All this at no or negligible cost, purity, without side effects and dollops of TLC (tender, loving care)! Sounds too good to be true? Well, it is just a little awareness and understanding that you need to make the best out of it. Read-up a bit on natural remedies to equip you to treat a toddler cranky with colic or diarrhea.

Stop the activity that has caused the pain, rest and protect the affected area with a padding or sling.

Before going to bed at night, take 1 cup of hot milk with 2 teaspoons of castor oil added. The laxative effect will eliminate pitta-type toxicity in the colon. If 2 teaspoons do not work, use 3 teaspoons the following night, adjusting your own dose. You should get a couple of good bowel movements in the morning, which will help to cleanse the impurities of the colon. You may continue using this remedy until your symptoms clear up.

The best cure for people bursitis -- when the cause is linked to gout -- is to drink plenty of water to flush out the system and maintain a proper diet. However, if the cause of your inflammatory bursitis is a trauma, then the cure may involve exercise, rest and avoiding repetitive motions.
