If you are affected by a painful shoulder, consult your physician first, and if you find yourself suffering from a Frozen Shoulder, a Bursitis, A Tendonitis or Impingement Syndrome, click on painful shoulder for an effective way to restore functionality and stop the pain.
A painful shoulder is often the clue that something is wrong with the rotator cuff, the shoulder joint that sits under the deltoid muscle and keeps the arm attached to the body while allowing for the greatest range of motion of any joint. Typically a pain in the shoulder starts like a little tingle that becomes worse as the time goes by. Over the 24 hours the pain is worse at night, and can grow so bad as to prevent sleeping. It then eases off during the day but still affects shoulder motion to different degrees depending on the condition and its phase.
For example a Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis), starts with a freezing phase usually with a dull pain on the side or rear of the joint that gradually becomes worse and spread to the front too. By the time the pain diminishes a frozen phase is in progress, with severely limited range of motion. This can last many months and up to 1 year. Finally the arm gradually recovers movement ability in the thawing phase, which can also last many months and up to 1 year. All together it is a very long and disabling process.
The Impingement, with its sister conditions of Bursitis and Tendonitis, is not as limiting like a Frozen Shoulder since full range of motion is still possible, but it is painful throughout its course. All these ailments are traditionally cured with anti inflammatory drugs, both steroidal and non steroidal. In the most severe cases manipulation can be performed (for frozen shoulder only), or surgery.
Most of the time though, it is possible to recover from any of the above with a specific rehabilitation program consisting of key stretching exercises to be performed even at home, but with professional guidance. Such a program can and will cut down on recovery times considerably. The shoulder is such a complicated joint that it can take months or even few years to recover if not treated correctly.
