Panic attacks are surprisingly common. Panic attacks are a disorder which affect millions of humans throughout the world; yet many don't realise that they have the condition. It's critical that if you feel you might be suffering from panic attacks, or that someone close to you might be, that you know what to look for. Here are ten telltale signs to assist you.
1. An increased heart rate will often accompany a panic attack. If you feel panic or anxiety coming on, then your heart beat will begin racing. Quite often, this will feel like a pounding within your chest, and when considered in conjunction with chest pains, it isn't surprising that panic attack sufferers sometimes believe that they are having a heart attack.
2. Shortness of breath is another sign of a potential panic attack. This usually happens because of the increased heart rate. As with the last symptom, a shortness of breath can also mean something else, so on its own, it is not a total indication that a panic attack has occurred.
3. It isn't an exaggeration to suggest that the fear suffered during a panic attack or an anxiety attack is near to terror for the individual suffering. Unless you have witnessed this yourself, it can he difficult to understand, but it can be very scary.
4. The irrational nature of a panic attack is often more obvious to the observer rather than to the sufferer themselves.
5. The major signal of a panic attack is the presence of an irrational fear. One particular fear is one of dying. Another example fear is that of losing control or becoming crazy. There are lots of other fears that may create panic in humans, and just because they seem unbelievable to you, it's important to bear in mind that the fears are very real to the sufferer.
6. Some people begin to feel a sense of not belonging, or false placement. By that I mean that the sufferer begins to believe that they aren't really in the situation that they find themselves in.
7. Some people begin to feel hot and cold when they suffer an attack. Any type of panic or anxiety can create this feeling of helplessness, which can result in hot and cold flushes.
8. You might experience a feeling of dizziness.
9. If you start to feel nauseous, particularly in conjunction with the other symptoms, then this is another possible indication of a panic attack.
10. An all out panic attack may mean that the sufferer really loses control of themselves and cannot function fully until they are able to calm down again.
It is critical to understand what a panic attack is, so that if it happens, you are in a position to assist the individual regain control. There are techniques that can be used to facilitate this, but if the attacks become more frequent, then the sufferer should seek professional assistance quickly so that the attack does not start to rule their life.
