Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is real illness and affects people in different ways. It is caused after seeing or living through a traumatic or dangerous event. Veterans of war often suffer with PTSD because of the war time environment and the horrors they have to endure.

"Trauma" refers to the impact of an event or series of events so intense, it causes significant changes in a person's physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder used to be called 'shell shock'. The condition was first recognised in soldiers returning from WW2 who had gone through shocking and overwhelming experiences at war.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an extremely serious condition to have as it is caused by a traumatic experience. The debate is about whether stress hypnosis can be used to treat PTSD? What is PTSD? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder resulting from exposure to intense trauma such as serving during wartime or being raped.

Common Symptoms :

- General Anxiety Disorder

- Irritability or anger

- Intense guilt or fear for no apparent reason

- Emotional numbness and sleep problems

- Severe Depression

- Mood Swings

The symptoms you will find in somebody suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can broadly be divided into three main types. Most people will fall into one type or another however, it should be noted that many people will display a mixture of symptoms that may only normally be found in one or another of each of the main categories.

These symptoms will typically be:

•    Feeling Jumpy

•    Difficulty Sleeping

•    Difficulty Concentrating

•    Easily Irritated

•    Easily Angered

PTSD is not entirely a psychological problem. There are also biological changes in a person's body that have been identified as part of the disorder. Because it often occurs alongside other issues, such as alcoholism, memory problems and substance abuse, it can be even worse.

Those who suffer from PTSD often have difficult functioning in their social or family life. This can lead to problems in their school, work or personal relationships.

Post traumatic stress disorder related anxiety comes in other forms as well. Many PTSD suffers also have a sleep deprivation problems that result from the fear of falling a sleep and being vulnerable to attack. Similarly they fight sleep in order not to dream. Most combat vets and accident victims have repeated nightmares that cause the sufferer to wake up in a sweat and are unable not to return to sleep. Anxiety mounts as exhaustion nears leading to intrusive episodes and even flashbacks to the original traumatic events.

Research reveals two specific symptoms of post traumatic stress labeled arousal and avoidance symptoms. The arousal symptoms are moodiness, lack of concentration and memory, over-reactions and proneness toward violence while the avoidance symptoms are unwillingness or inability to remember the trauma, and reluctance to feel or talk about emotions. When discussing symptoms, it is important to understand that although sometimes symptoms may occur within two or three months, in some cases, it may be years before symptoms develop.
