Preventing a Sinus Headache
Like many people, I suffered from sinus headaches for the majority of my adult life. Sometimes they were so severe, that I was nearly incapacitated. I was unable to work. I was unable to hold a conversation. I was unable to read a book. I wasn't even able to watch TV. The only thing I could do was lie down and hope the pain would subside enough to allow me to sleep.
I might have been able to cope with these sinus headaches better if sleep would have alleviated the problem as it does with most other headache. But each time I woke up in the morning the pain was there to greet me just like an alarm clock without a snooze button.
I continued to suffer from these sinus headaches for years. I finally discovered a way to prevent them from starting in the first place. Discovering this technique was a lengthy process with plenty of failed attempts. Before I elaborate on what I discovered, I think it would be helpful if I were to provide some information about the causes of sinus headaches. During most of the time that I suffered from them, the cause was a mystery to me.
What Causes Sinus Headaches?
The sinuses are cavities in the facial bones that serve some important purposes. The function of the sinuses is not to make your life miserable or the makers of over the counter medications rich. The actually play a role in voice production, and make the skull lighter so that the neck can support it, and absorb injuries to the skull.
Mucus producing membranes are also located within the sinus cavities. Mucus is used by the body to flush away foreign bodies or invaders so they never reach the lungs, which could cause a serious infection. When an irritant of germ invades the body, the mucus product is cranked up a notch. If the body can't get rid of the mucus quickly enough, it builds up in the cavities, causing pressure on parts of the face. This is the reason that congestion and sinus headaches feel as if your head is swelling like a giant balloon.
There are a wide range of irritants that can be responsible for the overproduction of mucus. Allergens, cold viruses, and fungi are some of the main causes. Sinus drainage problems can also be caused by polyps growing in the sinus cavities or a smaller than average drainage area.
Other Sinus Related Problems
Sinus headaches might be a little more bearable if they weren't often accompanied by other problems. One of the worst problems is ear aches. The deep pain can be very severe, bringing the most stoic adult to tears. Ear aches are causes by the build up of mucus that causes pressure in the ear. Almost everything in the face is connected. If the mucus doesn't drain it could result in an infection in the ear that will likely result in even more pain.
Some people are unable to eat because the head congestion puts pressure on the gums. This pressure can make chewing anything as painful as having infected gums. If you have problems with your teeth already, this can make the existing pain even more intense.
Treatment Options
Now that we've talked about the causes of sinus headaches and a few of the painful problems that accompany them, how can they be treated? There is some bad news; there isn't much that can be done to relieve them once they have taken hold.
Of course there are rows and rows of medictions at your local drug store that promise relief, but none of the delivers any results. If you happen develop a full blown sinus when the mucus continues to build up, your doctor can prescribe antibiotics that will likely cure part of the problem.
Before the problem reaches this point, you will likely have been suffering for some time. I missed countless days of work because of the pain of sinus headaches.
