Recognizing Gastro-esophageal Reflux Acid Symptoms

When the contents of your stomach reflux or regurgitate back up into your esophagus and throat you suffer from gastro-esophageal reflux disease. The more well known name is acid reflux disease and the primary cause is normally the inability of esophageal sphincter to properly close. This sphincter is supposed to remain closed, except for when swallowing, keeping stomach acids from moving back up the esophagus. The first step to treating this problem is recognizing reflux acid symptoms.

Once you think you may have acid reflux disease it is important to start treating it because it can become a serious health issue if ignored. Recognizing the symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux allows quick treatment to help prevent the complications that can occur. These include esophageal inflammation and lesions, damage of the throat, gastro-intestinal disorders, breathing problems. It is a chronic condition that does need to be treated on a continual basis and in some cases surgery provides the best choice.

Acid reflux is a problem that hits all age ranges. In infants and children gastro-esophageal reflux acid symptoms include spitting, coughing, vomiting, irritability, feeding discomfort or unwillingness to eat and in extreme cases blood in their stools. In infants you may also see them arch their back while crying in obvious discomfort. If you recognize any of these symptoms in your baby or young child they need to be seen by their pediatrician as acid reflux disease can cause serious harm to their gastro-intestinal system and esophagus.

They symptoms of acid reflux in adults can be similar to those in younger persons but they can also include abdominal pain and discomfort (heartburn), bad breath, bitter taste in the back of the throat, excessive salivation and in some cases sleep apnea caused by respiratory insufficiency.

As the disease progresses in the adult they may also begin to have difficulty breathing, chest burn and aching, nausea, throat inflammation and pain, difficulty breathing, and blood in their stool or vomit. In extreme cases it can cause Barrett's esophagus in which the lower esophageal lining is damaged which is a risk for throat cancer.

Recognizing gastro-esophageal reflux acid symptoms early is important. If you suffer from any of these symptoms see your doctor for treatment. There are several prescription medications and dietary changes that can help control acid reflux disease and spare you the more serious complications that it can bring.
