When the contents of your stomach reflux or regurgitate back up into your esophagus and throat you suffer from gastro-esophageal reflux disease. The more well known name is acid reflux disease and the primary cause is normally the inability of esophageal sphincter to properly close. This sphincter is supposed to remain closed, except for when swallowing, keeping stomach acids from moving back up the esophagus. In infants you may also see them arch their back while crying in obvious discomfort. They symptoms of acid reflux in adults can be similar to those in younger persons but they can also include abdominal pain and discomfort (heartburn), bad breath, bitter taste in the back of the throat, excessive salivation and in some cases sleep apnea caused by respiratory insufficiency.
As the disease progresses in the adult they may also begin to have difficulty breathing, chest burn and aching, nausea, throat inflammation and pain, difficulty breathing, and blood in their stool or vomit. In extreme cases it can cause Barrett's esophagus in which the lower esophageal lining is damaged which is a risk for throat cancer.
Recognizing gastro-esophageal reflux acid symptoms early is important. If you suffer from any of these symptoms see your doctor for treatment. There are several prescription medications and dietary changes that can help control acid reflux disease and spare you the more serious complications that it can bring.
