Scalp ringworm will affect around 10% of Americans this year. The infection itself isn't actually caused by any worm, the name ringworm comes from the pattern the infection can have on your skin. Ringworm of the scalp can be difficult to cure so knowing all of your options can save you time, and be more beneficial to your health.

Treating your scalp ringworm conventionally will require you to use an anti fungal shampoo, and an oral drug treatment ( Griseofulvin ). The reason you need an oral anti fungal drug is the shampoo can't penetrate your scalp to kill the fungus that has infected the hair shaft. The shampoo will kill the fungus that is living on your scalp, and help prevent the infection from spreading while you're taking the oral anti fungals.

As with all drugs there are some side effects associated with the oral medication. The other problem with side effects possible with this medication is in some cases it can take up to ten weeks of treatment before the infection is cured.

Possible side effects of treatment are quite rare, and they are...

Nausea and vomiting
Impaired co-ordination
Dizziness
Confusion
Fatigue
Liver damage
Rash
Sleep disturbance
Diarrhoea
Headache
Decreased numbers of white blood cells in the blood (leucopenia)
Disorder of the peripheral nerves causing weakness and numbness (peripheral neuropathy)
Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash (photosensitivity)

With the more severe side effects such as liver damage your chances increase with the amount of time you need to take the treatment for.

Other treatments that you can use on your scalp ringworm are natural cures. You can usually buy these online, and they work in a different way to conventional treatments.

One advantage with natural treatments is you don't need to take anything orally. The treatments are all topical, and can penetrate your skin, and cure the infection from the outside of your body. Natural ringworm cures can also be used by every member of your family at the same time.

Home remedies are getting more popular as well when it comes to treating ringworm. These will consist of products that you can purchase locally that someone has discovered successfully treat your infection.

Ringworm of the scalp is a difficult infection to cure for some of the millions of sufferers every year. Because of the popularity of the infection your options for a cure are growing all the time. Knowing what your options are, and knowing that you do have a choice will definitely be in your favor.
