Sore Shoulder - A Common Symptom to Different Conditions

A sore shoulder is often the indicator that something could be wrong with the shoulder joint, the rotator cuff. Typically the soreness is strongest at night, while during the day it eases off. It starts with a small tingling sensation that quickly grows worse and worse until a full blown condition is diagnosed upon a visit to the doctor.

Don't take this article as an invitation to self diagnose, though. Always consult your doctor first for professional advice. Generally speaking, it is a fact that a sore shoulder is a common symptom to the following conditions: on one hand Bursitis, Tendonitis and Impingement Syndrome, on the other hand a Frozen Shoulder, technically called Adhesive Capsulitis. All of these ailments start with a soreness that grows worse and eventually eases off in several months or even few years, in the worst case scenario.

This is not meant for scare mongering, but it is a fact that the shoulder, due to its complexity, takes longer than other joints to heal itself. Tendonitis and Bursitis are inflammations of two adjacent areas, the tendons of the rotator cuff and the bursa, a sack placed in strategic position to prevent such tendons from rubbing against the shoulder bones. When one gets inflamed, very often the other too follows, as inflammations know no boundaries. This leads to Impingement Syndrome, the pinching feeling felt when moving the arm. So Bursitis, Tendonitis and Impingement are parts of the same problem.

A Frozen Shoulder, or Adhesive Capsulitis, is instead caused by a scarring and thickening of the capsule membrane protecting the rotator cuff. At first, in the freezing phase, only soreness is felt but movement is still possible. After, in the frozen phase, when the scars have built up, movement is restricted but pain reduced. These scars are called adhesions, thus the name Adhesive Capsulitis. The adhesions eventually break down in a long thawing phase that can last up to one year, returning the arm to full range of motion.

Normally all these ailments are treated with anti inflammatory drugs, or even cortisone injection, manipulation or surgery, depending on gravity or phase. But these solutions cure just the symptoms, not the root cause, or involve invasive surgery. A stretching exercise program by a professional therapist can greatly reduce recovery times, naturally.

A shoulder rehabilitation program can be of great benefit for recovery times after an injury or while affected by a condition. The shoulder joint is the most complex joint in the human body. The rotator cuff is made up of 4 different tendons attached to 3 different bones, shoulder blade, collar bone, and arm top. The tendons slide over a bursa to avoid them getting inflamed and worn out by rubbing against the shoulder bones. Finally a membrane covers and protects the rotator cuff tendons like a capsule.
