Blighted ovum is also known as anembryonic pregnancy and even though this does not sound like a commonly experienced pregnancy complication, it happens to be experienced by most expecting women without them even realizing it. A blighted ovum is a situation when the placenta is formed but no fetus is seen on the ultrasound. In most cases of a blighted ovum, the pregnancy would be terminated in the form of a miscarriage. Very often blighted ovum occurs very early in pregnancy and gets dissolved even before the woman has learned of her pregnancy. However in certain cases you might experience the signs and symptoms of early pregnancy. Cramping and slight bleeding may also be noticed which will usually be followed by a heavy flushing out which you will think to be a heavy period. On other occasions, women assume that they are experiencing yet another period and they probably have not gotten pregnant at all. However the hCG levels continue to rise and the placenta continues to grow. Diagnosis would not be performed before the eight week and the ultrasound would show that the womb has no baby inside.

Almost 50% of first trimester miscarriages that take place do so because of a blighted ovum and this can rarely be prevented as it is a result of problems stemming from the chromosomes in which the bearer has no control. When your body begins to realize that the chromosomes in your fetus are not normal, the pregnancy terminates on its own as the body understands that the baby will not grow into becoming a normal one. Abnormal cell division or poor quality egg or sperm is usually the cause of a blighted ovum!

You must be wondering when the ultrasound does inform you about your blighted ovum, whether you should wait for a natural miscarriage or initiate one through a D&C? Normally, doctors will not suggest that you adopt D&C in case of an early pregnancy loss as it is medically proven that a woman’s body will naturally terminate a pregnancy when it is not a healthy one and the intervention of a surgery is not required unnecessarily as it brings along with it a number of risks and complications. But performing a D&C would help you know the reasons as to why your pregnancy could not develop normally. For that you might consider undergoing this surgery.

Since a blighted ovum occurs very naturally there is nothing you can do to bring the situation under control. It usually does not occur more than once so you can be relieved that if you have experienced it once, you will not have to go through the trauma of a failed pregnancy again. After the first blighted ovum you should experience your normal period in 4 to 6 weeks time, post the miscarriage that is. Some doctors are of the opinion that it is okay for you to try conceiving soon after the miscarriage but others suggest that you wait till the next period gets over. However do not fear that having experienced a blighted ovum once increases your chances of a future miscarriage. If anyway you do experience a blighted ovum after another for a sufficient number of times, doctors will look intot eh matter and ask you to take few tests before they can tell you what exactly is going wrong.

The team’s abortions and miscarriage are synonymous and denote the expulsion of the conceptus before the end before the end of 28th week of pregnancy. There is no sharp demarcation between late abortion and early premature labour; the division is merely one of descriptive convenience. After the 28th week delivery of the fetus is considered to be viable. Before the end or 28th week delivery of the fetus is only notifiable in Britain if it is born alive. http://urshealth.com
