The ADHD Disease
Recently when spending some time at a friend's house I happened to noticed a piece of literature titled "The ADHD Disease" placed on a book-stand. I was aware that my friend was starting to believe that both himself, and at least one of his children, had ADHD. It was fairly obvious to me that he was making an attempt to better understand the condition and possibly find a way to manage the primary symptoms of inattention, impulsive behavior, and hyperactivity, affordably and effectively.
So I enquired about "The ADHD Disease" and to my surprise that despite the title it seemed to have many of the facts right. For example approximately 8 percent of children and 5 percent of adults are thought to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and that ADHD (the hyperactive type) occurs from two to four times more often in boys than girls.
Many of the facts seemed current since it wasn't all that long ago when it was thought that boys outnumbered girls by a whopping 10:1 ratio.
But what about that title "The ADHD Disease." In actuality the title was describing how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can act as a disease eroding people's lives and bringing about undue stress which can have the same negative impact as some diseases. Pretty heady stuff, right?
But while this mental health condition might be broadly interpreted as the ADHD disease the cause/causes are not disease related. While a child has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the condition from birth if one of their parents has the disorder, and it may act like a disease in people's lives resulting in academic under achievement, social rejection, the inability to hold down a job for any period of time, heightened probability of divorce, and high incidence of a of childhood and teenage behavioral problems it is not a disease.
The truth is medical science has yet to fully unravel the mystery. One of the most promising theories as to why it occurs comes from functional brain scan studies between those without symptoms and those with symptoms. That said, researches are quick to point out that similar findings have been observed in studies of the structure of the brain of non-affected individual and those affected.
Another widely held belief primarily based on animal studies and behavioral changes associated with stimulant medications seems to point to brain transmitters chemistry/neurotransmitters involved with judgment, impulsive behavior, mental flexibility, alertness, planning, memory, and organizational skills. The two brain chemical messengers linked to this research are dopamine and norepinephrine.
A third, and the most recent, belief comes to us for the National Institute of Health. This study once again took advantage of advanced brain monitoring and scanning technology to unearth the possibility that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder could be a condition driven by lagging development in the areas of the brain responsible for self regulation.
In conclusion, with each passing day research gets closer to unraveling the mystery but the bottom line is that while we know ADHD is not a disease research has yet to be able to provide an iron clad explanation as to why it occurs.
