Top tips for selecting Herbal Psoriasis Treatments
If you suffer from psoriasis then chances are you have tried a range of treatments and products designed to offer relief and ease the symptoms. Unfortunately, many of the treatments you try will probably not have a great effect, and may even cause irritating side effects. Herbal treatments may seem a logical idea, as they are less likely to cause side effects than chemical based products; however there are a few things to consider when looking for a herbal psoriasis treatment.
Is it natural?
Over recent years, natural and organic products have become increasingly popular, and there are some manufacturers describing their products as ‘natural' when there may be very few natural ingredients. Take care to read the ingredients carefully, and check that it is as natural as it claims to be.
Many of the herbal treatments will contain other chemicals as cleaning agents – so don't be alarmed to see a long ingredients list, however if the ‘natural' ingredients are looking outnumbered then look into some of the other ingredients to see what might really be the active ingredients.
What are effective herbal ingredients for the treatment of psoriasis?
Herbal, or essential oils and extracts will be used as the active ingredients in herbal psoriasis treatments. There are a whole range of herbs and natural ingredients which have properties beneficial to psoriasis sufferers, some of which are listed below:
Chamomile – Chamomile is a naturally soothing and anti-inflammatory oil, which eases swelling and calms the skin. It can ease puffiness and helps to strengthen the skin tissue, aiding the repair of damaged skin. Chamomile has been found to be soothing oily, dry and irritated skin conditions.
Lavender: Often used as a sleeping-aid, Lavender is another soothing herb. It is an anti-inflammatory and also has a healing effect on skin complaints. It soothes damaged skin, and encourages a quick recovery. Some report that it also helps to prevent scarring.
Rosemary – Rosemary has been used throughout the ages as a rejuvenator for skin and hair, and has been found to help scalp conditions. It is an effective pain relieving agent as well as a powerful astringent, helping to cleanse as well as easing swelling.
Bergamot: Ideally suited for calming inflamed, irritated skin, the refreshing and cooling bergamot oil also has antiseptic properties. This makes ideal for warding off infections and helping damaged skin to heal.
What to avoid?
If you know that you have had allergic reactions to certain ingredients in the past, make sure that none are included in your potential new treatment. Whilst most natural ingredients are hypoallergenic, some people have had allergic reactions to linalool, or you may be allergic to any of the man-made ingredients.
Are there any reviews?
Finding out what other people have to say about a product is always a helpful way to find out the sorts of information which may not forthcoming from the manufacturers direct – for example, how long the product lasts, how much you need to use, and how it smells. Although not all psoriasis sufferers will have the same experiences and reactions to products, its is useful to read how effective it has been.
