Treat Nearsightedness with Lasik

Do you have trouble seeing street signs but can easily read your favorite book?  Most likely, you are nearsighted, medically referred to as myopia. Nearly 30 percent of Americans suffer from myopia. (American Optometric Association)

Nearsightedness or myopia results from the lengthening of the eyeball. It is not yet determined what causes myopia. Many studies suggest it is hereditary. Visual stress may also be to blame. Spending a lot of time watching TV, working on the computer or other intense visual work may lead to the development of nearsightedness.

The most common sign of nearsightedness is difficulty with the focus of distant objects. For example trouble seeing the TV or street signs. Most likely, close objects are seen clearly, such as the newspaper.

Nearsightedness can be corrected with Lasik surgery. This procedure has been FDA approved since 1995. Lasik is performed by removing the precise amount of corneal tissue needed to reshape the eye. A thin flap is created, the surgeon then uses a cool laser to reshape the cornea. The flap is then put back in place to heal. There is no pain and you remain awake during the procedure.

The surgery only takes about 10 minutes and you can go home the same day. Protective eyewear is suggested after the surgery while you sleep for 1 week.

Lasik is the most commonly used treatment for nearsightedness. The results are lasting in mild to moderate cases. Those suffering from severe nearsightedness are usually not a candidate for LASIK. .

A comprehensive eye exam will determine if you have nearsightedness. Once diagnosed you can discuss your options for treatment.

Always see an experienced Lasik surgeon who has completed a cornea fellowship, which is a special training program after completion of the traditional residence program.

Lasik is the most common treatment and may be the best option for you, find out today.
