Treatment of a Burn Blister

Posted: May 28, 2011 |Comments: 0 | Views: 162 |

Blisters form on the skin because of allergic reactions, or when the skin is damaged by friction, burns, or chemicals. One can find blisters formed on the foot by extensive outdoor walking while wearing under-sized hiking boots. Constantly working with tools requiring application of pressure/force with hands can also cause blisters on the fingers or the palm of the hand. Besides, one can also experience formation of blisters on account of burns caused accidentally by hot water, hot oil, gas stove, or even hazardous chemicals.

The watery fluid in the blister is not any kind of infection as some people appear to contend. The fluid, in fact, helps in healing the skin underneath. New skin forms under the blister and the fluid is gradually absorbed. Eventually, the outer layer of the skin comes off. No first-aid treatment is needed unless the blister breaks or is likely to be damaged by further friction. If the burn blister breaks off, it should be thoroughly cleaned and then dressed with an appropriate dressing - to accelerate the healing process and to avoid any infection from developing inside. How can this be done?  This can be done by following step by step instructions as follows:

1. First of all, you need to have the following things handy to begin the treatment:

(i) Anti-bacterial soap
(ii) A pair of scissors
(iii) Rubbing alcohol or medicinal spirit
(iv) Water
(v) Hydrogen peroxide
(vi) Antibiotic ointment
(vii) Adhesive bandage or Gauze pad.

2. It is imperative that before beginning, whosoever is involved in the treatment should wash his/her hands thoroughly with an anti-bacterial soap.

3. The scissors that are going to be used should be sterilized by leaving them in alcohol or medicinal spirit for at least five minutes.

4. Now, cut away the dead skin over and around the open burn blister. Care should be exercised in doing so to avoid the scissors from hitting the wound underneath.

5. The open area of the burn blister should then by cleaned with anti-bacterial soap and water. Any fluid or foreign material (such as debris/hair, etc.) left at the location of the wound should be meticulously removed.

6. The next step is to disinfect the wound by using hydrogen peroxide. Gently pour this hydrogen peroxide over the open blister until the wound is soaked in it.

7. Now, apply the antibiotic ointment on the blister by taking a very small amount on your finger tip and then gently rubbing it over the entire area of the wound.

8. Finally, cover the wound with an adhesive bandage (with a perforated soft cloth patch placed in the middle) if the wound is small. Or else, use a gauze bandage to cover the wound in such a manner that it allows the wound to breathe and heal.

In order to let the wound to heal quickly, it is advisable to change the dressing on daily basis.
