backpain-woman-couch.jpgThe muscles of back and shoulder work almost in combination and sympathy with each other.  Therefore, the causes and symptoms of pain in both are almost the same.   Here are some causes of the upper back and shoulder pain:

 1. Tendonitis

According to dictionary, a tendon is "a cord or band of dense, tough, inelastic, white and fibrous tissue that connects a muscle with the bone".
Tendonitis or the inflammation of the shoulder joint causes severe pain   both in the shoulder as well as in the back.

2. A Torn Rotator Cuff

A rotator cuff is a set of four muscles that controls the rotation of the shoulder. When the rotator cuff is torn or injured it causes severe pain in the shoulder, arm and back. Quite often the doctors prescribe surgery to cure the torn rotator cuff.

3. Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is degenerative disease of joints and it usually afflicts middle aged and older people. It is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in the joints which causes severe pain, stiffness and swelling. Osteoarthritis may occur both in the shoulder as well as in the back.

Treatment

Immediate treatment

Pain in the upper back often occurs in the upper Trapezius or the triangle shaped muscle located in the upper back as well as in the shoulder blades.

In most cases it is the trigger points  that cause pain in the muscles.  A trigger point is tender and sensitive part of the muscle or a connective tissue. When it is compressed, it sends shooting pain throughout the muscle. Trapezius contains several trigger points that cause severe pain in the upper back and shoulder.

Pain in the Trapezius can be substantially relieved if its trigger points are massaged. The patient can either do the massage himself or ask someone else to do it.

Expert advice

Since upper back and shoulder pain can occur due to multiple causes, it is always recommended that the patient should seek medical diagnosis and advice before starting any treatment.

It has been found that most doctors advise surgery for upper and shoulder pain. Patients should always seek second opinion before accepting surgery as the only option. They should go for surgery only after exhausting all the conventional treatments.
