Lap Band surgery is growing in popularity amongst those who wish to lose weight and lose it fast. It is designed for those who have a body mass index of 40 BMI and higher. Someone can have Lap Band surgery if they are known to have certain mental problems that improve when weight is lost. In other words, it has a great effect relieving depression amongst the overweight, especially if their depression is associated with their obesity.
However, it is interesting how the surgery is done. Doctors place a silicone prosthetic device that is inflatable around the top of the obese person's stomach via laparoscopic surgery, which makes the stomach smaller. The idea is that the person has to continue watching what they eat because the stomach can expand even though the device is in place. However, they become full faster and usually do not have a need to eat more than what the doctor's recommend.
The benefits are overwhelming such as a lower mortality rate, there is no stapling of the stomach after the surgery, the lap band can be removed and does not interfere with the normal functioning of the stomach, the hospital stay is short, and there are considerably less complications. Most importantly, the weight comes off rapidly with periodic adjustments of the Lap Band that are usually done by X-ray at various points. The effects are rather overwhelming with the average patient losing around 1 to 2 pounds per week on a regular basis. Those who are severely obese tend to lose weight faster than those who are not as obese as they are. This can turn out to be between 50 and 100 pounds for a majority of patients who undergo the surgery.
But there are some health problems that may keep a person from being able to have Lap Band surgery. These conditions include:
- Heart failure
- Sclerosis of the liver,
- Any condition that prevents a patient from being able to be given anesthesia
- Sleep apnea
These conditions are those in which a patient cannot be considered for Lap Band surgery. These are the cases in which the patient is recommended for regular weight loss means such as diet and exercise under a doctor's supervision. However, those with some problems can work with a weight loss specialist to reduce complications by losing some weight before the procedure and seeing how that has an impact on their health. Of course not much can be done about Sclerosis of the liver and heart disease, but sometimes sleep apnea and other conditions that prevent a patient from being able to be given anesthesia can be eliminated by weight loss.
Yet the conditions may not be associated with the obesity, therefore the doctor may determine that that particular individual is not a candidate for lap band surgery, but that doesn't mean that losing weight is not within reach. As stated before, by working with a doctor a person can lose their desired amount of weight. Even Lap Band patients have to do some work the first couple of years after having the surgery, but in the end the results end up being the same in the long-term. The process just starts quicker for those who receive Lap Band surgery.
If you are interested in Lap Band surgery, talk with a weight loss specialist to see if you are a candidate for the procedure. The specialist will screen your health to ensure there are no conditions that can cause complications in the surgery. This can be a great start to looking absolutely wonderful and being healthy while doing it.
