What Determines Who Gets Depression?

It is very surprising to see that depression has always been associated with old age while the truth of the matter is that, if we were to ask the question, who gets depression? for a professional doctor to answer, he or she would tell you that not only old people can experience depression episodes but even young people succumb to this problem. It is possible due to the fact that this health problem can be caused by different factors that can take place in the body. These include biological factors such as hormonal imbalance in the body, lifestyle influences such as poor living conditions, and emotional related problems like bad relationships and so on.

To further answer the question, who gets depression? We see that both sexes meaning both men and women suffer from depression. In women, the condition is always seen to have a higher chance of occurring compared to men. The reason behind this is that, women undergo more body activities that contribute to hormonal imbalance in the body something that affects the brain and this may ultimately make the person emotionally unstable. These body activities include things such as pregnancies, giving birth, and menstrual cycles among others.

When we come to men, we see that situations that affect their ego can easily make them get depressed. These things include being troubled by their spouses or not achieving as much as their friends have achieved in their lives. These conditions make the man have troubled sleeping patterns and always appear withdrawn. This condition may however disappear if the man's family jumps in and offer him their support during these trying times. The family may help by reassuring the man that all is not lost or they may decide to take him to see a professional doctor who may ultimately help him with his problems by listening and counseling him.

Teenagers can also get depressed because of many reasons that may be attached to them. Some of these reasons include identity crisis whereby, the teenager tries to stand out on his own while at the same time trying to detach himself from any attachments he may still be having to his parents. Unfortunately, when the teenager does not successfully achieve this mission, he may try to force it on his parents. When the parents resist the idea, episodes of depression are likely to be experienced by the teenager. He will always appear irritable, have eating problems, perform poorly in school, start indulging in bad behavior such as smoking and promiscuity just to mention but a few.

It is however a totally different story when it comes to old people. This is a group of people in the society that are considered to be prone to depression cases compared to other people. The reason here being, old people often suffer from numerous illnesses compared to the other age groups in the society. With these illnesses present, the old men and women usually feel weak and unable to achieve much in their remaining period of life. This feeling makes them believe that they are of no use to anyone and rather just a nuisance to everyone else. It is in these times that episodes of depression start taking place. When these episodes occur, the old man may be at times rendered crazy since he may be seen to speak to himself, cry a lot without any reason to or just keep to himself most of the time. Therefore the next time you ask the question, who gets depression? just know that anyone is capable of getting depression.
