What is Simvastatin ?

Posted: Apr 13, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Simvastatin is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood.

Simvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, triglycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. It belongs to a group of drugs known as "statins." It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease and helps prevent strokes and heart attacks.
Simvastatin is used in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Simvastatin side effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with simvastatin.
However, not everyone who takes it will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the drug well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. Even if side effects do develop, most people do not need to stop taking the medicine. In previous research studies, up to 1.4 percent of people stopped taking simvastatin because of side effects.

Before taking simvastatin

You should not take simvastatin if you are allergic to it, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you have liver disease.If you have any of these other conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests:

history of kidney disease;
diabetes;
a thyroid disorder;
or if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.
