- Distal Subungual Onychomycosis (DSO)

This is the most common type of nail fungus infection found among people. The dermatophytes, Trichophyton rubrum, a fungus adapted for living in hair, nails and skin is the chief cause of this type of nail fungus.

The nail fungus infection starts under the nail at the end of the toe or finger. The nail and the nail-bed become infected by the growth of fungus all over the nail matrix.

Symptoms in the initial stage includes the separation of the nail-plate from the nail-bed, and discoloration to a few parts of the infected nail-plate. Gradually, as the fungus spread, the nail-plate get thick and discoloration appear all over the nail.

- White Superficial Onychomycosis (WSO)

This is the more uncommon types of onychomycosis that typically affects the toenails, but not the fingernails. It is generally caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes, which is another dermatophyte.

This fungus has the feature to develop in the surface superficial layers of nails and subsequently spreads to involve the entire nail plate.

In the beginning, small white patches appear on the surface of the nail-plate. With the advancement of the symptoms, the white spots turn into white powder that makes the nail crumble.

The fungus feeds on the keratin protein of the nail to derive nutrients, and in this process makes the nail ill-shapen, soft, and crumbly.

- Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis (PSO)

It is the least common type of fungus infection that is mainly caused by the fungus, trichophyton rubrum.

This type of onychomycosis normally begins at the surface of the nail fold, and gradually moves to the deeper layers of the nail-plate. The fungus invades the root, where nail is built, and then move toward the edge of the nail.

As the symptoms of the PSO progresses, the nail folds become infected, and the nail detach itself from the nail bed. This nail fungus infection is so uncommon in healthy people that its occurrence may signal the abnormality with the immune system.
