When Does ADHD Begin and How Might It Evolve?

Recently I ran into some friends whose son had been diagnosed with ADHD. During the conversation one of the parents delivered the stunning revelation that her ADHD had started later in life, almost popping up overnight,  and believed it was caused by exposure to lead during a home renovation.

Is she right or is she wrong? Could This Really Happen?

Exposure to lead might have produced to symptoms resembling ADHD but the truth of the matter is that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder never beings in adulthood. While she may have ADHD, and 50 percent of parents do, ADHD begins very early in life and is normally recognized before the age of 7. The adult version is only an extension of the childhood version. To be clear there is no form of attention deficit disorder that begins in adulthood or that only affects adults.

That said, the adult and childhood versions may differ somewhat. ADHD is a neurobiological disorder involving both brain chemicals and how different areas of the brain communicate and develop. Brain chemistry and structure may change during the aging process so the symptoms observed in childhood are likely to be much different from those observed as an adult.

When painting the condition with a broad brush it could be said that as one ages hyperactivity will tend to decrease and symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and challenges with executive functions (organizing, prioritizing, and planning) will likely become worse.

Also the appearance of ADHD symptoms may appear quite different as one ages. For example the type of impulsive behavior seen at age 7 may be a far cry to what will be seen at the ripe old age 45.

Do All Children With ADHD Carry The Condition Into Adulthood?

The short answer is no according to the National Institute of Health. According to the research conducted by the NIH about 50 percent of children with ADHD grow out of the disorder at some point in their twenties. The reason given was that certain regions of the brain in children with ADHD are slow to develop.

This study used brain scan technology (MRIs) to compare the brains of 400 children with and without the condition. The middle portion of the brain which is responsible for self regulation and attention/focus matured later than the norm in children with ADHD.

The conclusion of the study was that many children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder eventually catch up with children without the disorder and over time will see a decrease in primary ADHD symptoms such as inattention and hyperactivity.

It's important to note that, as with any medical test, the results must be correctly assessed by a skilled individual. Simply because a brain map is computer created, it is vunerable to what's known as "artifacts" which are data which are produced by something other than the brain itself for example muscle contraction or erroneous placement of the recording electrode. QEEG assessments are most frequently administered in a clinical environment, either a medical center, or a Neurologist'...
