When Treating Excess Stomach Acid, Should You Rely on Acid Reflux Medications or Natural Treatments?

Posted: Mar 26, 2011 |

Typically, when something is ailing us we turn to some type of medicine to relieve our pain or symptoms. Often, this is done without knowing much about the particular medication at all. For example, there are numerous acid reflux medications on the market these days. As soon as we feel some discomfort in our chest we take something to relieve the discomfort.

However, do you even know how the specific medication works? Are you even sure that you have acid reflux or heartburn. Let your doctor make the diagnosis and the recommended treatment. Often, the symptoms can be relieved by simply taking an over the counter antacid tablet such as Rolaids or Tums.

Like many aliments though, there are natural remedies that seem to work just as well. Would you use a prescription medication or would you try a natural cure for acid reflux. First, let's take a look at some other common medications for acid reflux.

Zantac: This medicine is prescribed for patients that have throat or stomach problems manifested by too much stomach acid. In addition, patients with ulcers in the stomach or intestines are given this to prevent the ulcers from returning after being treated.

Nexium: This reflux medication is one of the most common medicines prescribed for this condition. In fact, a family member has been prescribed this particular one. It seems to have benefited her. However, if she were to make some lifestyle changes then the symptoms would have a higher chance of not returning.

Nexium works by preventing the stomach from producing acid. Technically, it is known as a proton pump inhibitor. By decreasing the production of stomach acid it can help to prevent any serious damage to the digestive system in addition to relieving the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux.

Prilosec: This reflux medication works by stopping acid production in the stomach. It is also considered a proton pump inhibitor. By decreasing the amount of acid in the stomach, the patient you experience relief from the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux.

Maalox: Maalox is used to treat the symptoms caused by excess acid in the stomach. It also helps to reduce gas in the stomach. Typically, a liquid antacid will work quicker and more effectively than an antacid tablet.

From a personal standpoint, I have used Maalox and antacid tablets to provide relief from the symptoms of heartburn. I have found that Maalox works better for me.

I am also trying natural remedies as I do not want to rely on antacid medications. I think that as we get older we often look for alternative methods of treating common ailments. Why is that? Is it a mistrust of pharmaceutical companies or maybe it is the potential side effects associated with many medications these days.

Used in moderation, medications for acid reflux such as antacid tablets work quite effectively. However, when used frequently they can lead to other medical conditions. As always, consult your physician if you are experiencing any chest pains in order to properly treat the problem. Even if you are considering using natural treatments, your doctor should be consulted.
