While STDs are some of the most difficult infections to catch, current statistics show that they are quite common. After many years of a decrease in reported cases, the STD gonorrhea is now actually showing an increased number of reported cases. Sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, herpes, and syphilis can be passed from one person to another without them ever knowing. This means that there are many men and women who may be infected with STDs, yet show no symptoms and therefore have not reported their infection.
Usually people do not see their doctor for an STD test until they see some sort of symptoms that alert them of a possible infection. But even when a sexually transmitted disease has been contracted, symptoms, if any, can take some time to show up. So if you are ever in doubt as to the history of your partner with whom you have been intimate, you could see your family doctor for an STD test or look into one of your home STD test options.
Want to get information on your status for sexually transmitted diseases? See a doctor to find out your risk factors. Doctors can assess your risk factor with questions about your sexual history. This assessment will guide them towards which STDs you may be tested for. For instance, someone with a new partner or with multiple partners would most likely be tested for Chlamydia and gonorrhea. People who have an STD, pregnant women, men engaging in high risk sex with other men, and individuals in certain other high risk groups would be tested for syphilis. It is important to talk with your doctor if you believe you may have come into contact with any specific STD so a test can be arranged.
It is possible that an STD be detected during a physical examination; from a Pap smear; and in tests of blood, urine, and genital and anal secretions. While this is possible, it cannot be completely assumed that an infection of the genital area or an STD will be caught in a routine exam. People who are not in a monogamous relationship would benefit from being proactive about testing for STDs such as herpes, HPV and gonorrhea.
Those who want information but prefer the most privacy possible can look into an STD test that can be taken at home. If this is the preferred method of testing, a person should make sure that the STD test comes from a reliable source and that thought has been given to all STDs that should be tested for.
Because symptoms often never show up, a sexually transmitted disease can progress into complications that are quite serious. Therefore the best plan of action is to take measures to prevent an STD infection instead of having to treat an STD.
