Nutrition Management is an essential to diabetic treatment and this includes meal, planning, diet and nutrition. For diabetics, it doesn't require a lot of effort but sometimes can be difficult to maintain. In making the meal plan, you must consider the patient's food preferences, lifestyle, usual eating times, and ethnic and cultural background.

Diabetics who use medical management like insulin needs greater flexibility in the timing and content of meals. Adjustment in the dosage of insulin must be done because of the possible changes in eating habits and lifestyle.

When planning, it requires motivation and dedication of the person because a lot of changes may happen. First of all, you should take a person's diet history to identify his or her eating habits and lifestyle. The patient has to be thoroughly assessed to identify the proper management. It is important to know whether the patient needs to gain, lose or maintain weight. Most patients with type 2 diabetes require weight reduction.

Teaching the patient about meal planning will require various approaches. Education tools can be used in order for the patient to easily learn about meal planning. Initial education addresses the importance of consistent eating habits and the relationship of food and insulin. Having an individualized meal plan is necessary because each one has a different need.

Certain aspects of meal planning may be difficult to learn. Food exchange system may be difficult especially for someone who misunderstands its benefits. Some people may feel deprived of the food they eat and feel that they have limited food choices.

However, planning is sometimes difficult to achieve because it requires a lot of self-control. You must restructure the way you think about food in general. One must be able to learn management skills, such as eating at restaurants, reading food labels, and adjusting the routines for exercise, illness, and special occasions.
