Blackout Roller Shade Evolutions

With the entrance of the horseless carriage, and the incredible ease at which production lines can be streamlined for simple production, there came a great level of innovation in many industries and categories. Among these innovations was the great improvements to the blackout roller shades used to darken rooms worldwide. As one would have seen old style roller shades used ugly plain designs, now one can select among the many options of high quality and attractive treatments using higher quality roller shade fabrics, ensuring not only a great appearance, but a long-lasting product.

To discuss blackout roller shades, let’s start by explaining the most basic. Plain blackout shades are made using a multiple layer plastic material. Newer higher quality roller shades use material that is cored by a fiberglass sheet, which provides strength to the shade fabric. Older fabric was thinner and more tearable, so these new versions are better, straight from the start. However, there are several other enhancements to consider.

Top of the line roller shades include a chain/cord operated control system which facilitates the operation and widens the user’s options. These controls allow the operator to raise or lower the shade to a specific point without ever having to touch the material thus keeping the shade material clean of finger prints and significantly reducing wear and tear thus prolonging the useful life of the product.

The chain control systems for roller shades have a chain that hangs adjacent to the roller shades which is then use to manipulate the roller shads into the proper position as the user desires it. More than that, the chains that are used to control these systems may be color coordinated with many of the choices that one may select for a blackout roller shade. The plastic chains that are used for these shades are more decorative than their machined appearing cousins, the metal chains. Note, by the way, that plastic chains are usually stronger than the metal chains, often being able to withstand twice the weight and pull force compared to the typical metal chains in roller shades.

Next a blackout roller shade can be decorated by simply selecting from a range of colors that coordinates with your decor. Rather than a simple choice of one or two colors, the new collections of roller shades offer many options for blackout roller shade fabrics. The range of colors goes as far as to offer such colors as green and black, as well as the traditional white and off white. The ability to coordinate your roller shades to the remaining decor in your spaces can help them to be more attractive.

Some suppliers of roller shades shades offer the ability to coordinate and decorate your shades by using a valance. A valance, in window treatments, is a top covering for a product which conceals the controls system. Usually these are not needed for roller shades, as the control system, or at least the tube, is covered by the fabric. However, some consumers like to hide their roller shade controls and brackets, for these people, a valance may help solve this desire.

The basic of the roller shades that are out there, those which use the plain vinyls, are often so very basic, that little can be done to make them gorgeous. However, the trims that are available out there help tremendously to accomplish the goal of making nice looking roller shades. Consider that attractive metal bottom bars, or fancy trims, are a fine finishing touch, and can make the bottom of the shade, the part that is always seen, appear to be contemporary, traditional, modern, or any other targeted goal in the decor.

In summary, blackout roller shades have evolved into a multiple option window treatment system that provide a specific appearance and simultaneously meet certain desired specifications which solve the unique needs and requirements of the consumer. Another point worth mentioning is the reliability of roller shades from an operational point of view and ease of operation especially by individuals with physical limitations.
