Did You Know That Log Cabins Can Extend Your Home?

Building a Log Cabin can be a very clever way of extending your home. Made of the purest natural materials, log cabins will always enhance your property. One thing is for sure, people will be highly impressed to see a log cabin within your property.

Log cabins can come in all shapes and sizes. From the smallest barna shed for storing the lawnmower and bicycles, to larger multi-roomed log homes that are more suited to actual living space.

If you are not a handy man or expert at DIY, then one solution is to buy a log cabin. Cabins can come pre-built, or can be built to any specification that you desire (available space and planning permission permitting!).

The many advantages of buying a log house include:-

  • Additional Space & Storage
  • General Use
  • Adding a Workplace
  • Additional Living Room Space
  • Log Cabins Are Long Lasting
  • Natural Looking Log Design
  • Good Value for Money

Log Cabins are generally made from sustainable timber and other materials and come from the coldest parts of the world. Wood in cold countries grows more slowly and is therefore ticker and more robust. This makes the timber less prone to warping, splitting and cracking. The wood can be kiln dried to ensure that no moisture exists during the building of the log cabin.

Log walls can vary in thickness. If you need a log cabin for storage, then a narrower 28mm wall is perhaps sufficient. If the cabin is to be used for living in then a ticker wall of 44mm, 70mm, 90mm or even larger would be advisable. This of course depends on the climate you live in - the colder the ticker the wall should be. Even better still, you can even have a composite wall which consists of two walls separated by an air cavity for additional insulation.

Before you start building a Log Cabin, you should first check with the Development restrictions for your area. Check with local authorities to see what type of planning permission is required. Do this before you even work on clearing the site.

It's usually advisable to keep the each timber log treated on a regular basis. Treat with a good quality woodcare system that is designed for exterior wood protection. Products can even provide up to 5 years protection against harsh weather conditions and UV / Ultra Violet radiation.

In conclusion, log cabins provide a very flexible way to extend, improve, and add value to your home.
