The global economic slowdown has propelled everyone to cut down the costs in each department of our life, whether it is our daily expenses, salaries, jobs or home remodeling. The current situation has left us with no option but to cut down on home improvement as well. But the other side of this story does not look so dull. That means we can do the same (home remodeling/improvement) at our own. The DIY (Do-It-Yourself) trend has got a momentum and homeowners prefer to making home improvement on their own as it suit their budget.
Here we will discuss about plywood that is required at every stage of home improvement, whether you are building, repairing or redecorating. Plywood is used for DIY flooring, roofing, furniture, platform, paneling and lining of exterior as well as interior walls. Different kinds of plywood is available in the market for the DIY'ers such as marine plywood, softwood plywood, hardwood plywood, coated plywood, fancy plywood, etc.
Buying Tips for Plywoods
If you are a DIY enthusiast and planning to buy plywood for repairing or redecoration of your home, then there are certain essential things that you should know before buying them.
- The selection of plywood depends on its use. If it is to be used for some outside purpose and the plywood may be exposed to water and weather then you must choose exterior WBP (Weather and Boil Proof) plywood. Such type of plywood can be used outside and are made of water-resistant adhesives. They are capable of resisting a certain amount of moisture. However if the plywood will be exposed only to home moisture, then use interior plywood.
- It is not essential to choose high grade plywood for all purposes. If the plywood will be exposed to only one side that means you need only one good side of plywood. Selection of plywoods with good face and worse back can help you cut significant costs.
- If you need good plywood durability for your usages, select WBP plywood regardless of whether it is to used for interior or exterior purposes.

Maintenance Tips for Plywoods
- If the plywood is supposed to be exposed to water/moisture/weather, painting their edges would extend the life of plywood. It creates a layer that prevent edges from absorbing moisture or water.
- Always store plywood flat to prevent it from warping. Even if you need to store it on its edge, keep it on wooden blocks so that the bottom edge won't absorb moisture.
- Rub all the edges of plywood with a stub of candle wax to keep from absorbing moisture.
- While cutting plywood with a hand-saw, keep the finished side face up in order to prevent it from splintering. However in case of a circular saw or jigsaw, the finished side should be keep facing down.
