Do You Want To Build Your Own Windmill?

With stock windmills costing between $15,000 and $25,000, even for a domestic unit, it is worth thinking about how to build your own windmill. And it is really very easy to do, with some people claiming to make a diy windmill for as little as $200. This kind of money will not get you a grand windmill, but the potential savings are really significant.

So, if you are thinking about making a windmill, what do you need to do first? Before starting to build your own windmill you should do some research:

  • Local average wind speed. In spite of what others might say, windmills do not operate very well in average winds under 10 mph. The US Government has made available detailed wind resource maps, which should be consulted before making a windmill.
  • Building Codes. Find out if you will be allowed to build the type of windmill you want. For a small windmill you probably will be OK, but it’s best to make sure.
  • Area of windmill site. Plan on roughly half an acre for a small windmill.
  • Next-door neighbors. Consult neighbors first about your ideas, and overcome their objections to potential noise, interference with TV reception and similar concerns.
  • Windmill capacity. No point in making a huge windmill that will generate more electricity than you need. The utility company will not buy any surplus from you, only offset it against your grid consumption.
  • Storage. If you want some independence from the grid you will need to include storage batteries. It is possible to get these for nothing if you know where to look. Or you might decide to use your windmill simply as a way of reducing your draw on the grid supply.

Getting the answers to these questions right is a little tricky, so it is really sensible to ask for expert advice before you start building. With this help you will be able to select the best plans, and make sure these include full lists of materials needed for the assembly as well as clear-step-by-step instructions.

Small windmills have only a few components. Typically these are:

  • A propeller (usually 3 propeller blades fixed to a hub)
  • A DC motor
  • A fantail
  • An axle to which these are fitted
  • A tower
  • An inverter, if AC is required
  • Batteries

With some electrical cable and a collection of nuts and bolts, that’s all you need. Almost certainly you will have many of these items in your shed but, even if you have to buy everything, you should be able to assemble all you need for less than $200. It is quite feasible to assemble and fit a small windmill in a weekend.

Detailed step-by-step instructions and diagrams to show you how to make a windmill are beyond the scope of this article, but they are available for very little money. Please visit our specialized website if you would like further information.
