Dirty tap water! Is that your problem? I think it is a problem many people have and that is why so many are looking at a homemade carbon water filter. You need to get clear and healthy water in the house.
The big advantage of activated carbon is that it really cleans the water excellently. You will be surprised to know that it will even get rid of the chlorine in the water. So even pre-treated water will come out completely clean and free of chlorine. So, heavily contaminated water can be pre-treated with chlorine and then you can get rid of the chlorine afterward. Now you may be thinking, why not simply use bottled water instead? It is a very valid argument. Most bottled water are of exceptional quality and can be consumed without any problem. The biggest problem though is the cost of bottled water. If you want to be completely safe and drink only bottled water and use only bottled water in your cooking, it is going to burn a hole in your pocket!
So, some kind of water purification will be your best option and it you use a homemade carbon water filter you will know you are giving your family the maximum protection possible.
