Has your home recently suffered from flood damage? There is nothing worse than having to try and salvage some of your most precious possessions, especially when you are not even sure where to begin cleaning your flooded home. That is why if your insurance covers it, we highly recommend hiring water damage restoration companies who can do flood clean up for you. But if you are going to have to fix the water damage caused by flooding, then here are a few tips on how to salvage your carpets.
The biggest problem with flood damaged carpets is that if they stay wet for more than 24 to 48 hours, mold can start to grow on them. If mold begins to grow on the carpets, you will have to throw them away. So you will need to clean the carpets and dry them quickly if you want to save them.
So, if the weather permits, take the carpets out of your house and get them outside. There is nothing you can do to save the carpet padding; you will just need to take it out and throw it away. You will have to buy new padding before you re-install your carpeting. Pulling up the carpets and padding will also let the subflooring dry out so that it does not get damaged.
Once the carpets are outside you will want to get all the dirt out of the water damaged carpet using a high pressure hose to rinse the carpets out. Next, use a commercial rug shampoo to clean out the carpets.
Do small two feet sections of the carpet at a time. If the dirt has seeped deep into the carpet, you should get a stiff bristle brush to scrub the carpets out. Then, rinse out the shampoo with a sponge. Make sure and wring out the dirty water from the sponge often.
Finally, dry the carpets as quickly as possible. If it is sunny and warm outside, this will be a lot easier. You will just have to lay the carpets out in a dry, sunny area. If you need to, you can use a fan. There are industrial fans you can rent for cheap that are used when carpets are professionally cleaned. But really any fan will work; you just need the carpet to totally dry out within 24 hours so that mold cannot grow on it.
