How to decorate your home

If the thought of decorating your home overwhelms you, use these simple tips to enhance the beauty quotient of your abode. These tips will help you to take care of the furnishings, colors, nick-knacks and fabrics while you decorate your home.

Keep the natural environment of your home in mind while decorating it. You can start with the architectural approach. However, remember to opt for décor that gels well with the surroundings. For example, a casual country decoration that uses checks, floral, cotton, linen, and other cheerful colors, is apt for cottages. Victorian homes on the other hand need to have a more formal décor with pastel colors, lots of antiques, ferns, lace and flowered wallpaper. Nautical themes go well with Cape Cod. Homes situated in the woods look best when decorated with plants, natural fabrics and materials that are painted in simple colors. You can decorate city lofts with some contemporary materials like chrome and glass. Remember – whatever you do, let it complement the surroundings and design of your home. It will not be prudent to fight against the architectural style of your home while decorating it.

When you are unsure about what colors will go well with the interiors of your home, you can begin small by experimenting with a pillow, rug, towel, a painting, a tapestry etc in various shades. You can select three to five colors and use articles in these colors to be kept in different rooms of your home. It’s best to go for neutral colored furniture – especially for those that are big in size like the recliners, couches, love seats etc. Remember to accessorize them with proper color. It’s not mandatory to shove all your furniture against a wall. Rather, place them in groups to create various zones like conversation areas, reading areas or sitting areas.

When accessorizing your home with collections and nick-knacks, you need to keep certain rules in mind. First of all, go for odd numbers -one, three, five, etc. You can put one big article on a small side table, while a coffee table can have three decorative pieces. It’s advisable to have equal proportions and different heights while organizing the decorative pieces. For example, you can put a short object along with a tall or medium object. You may even use wooden boxes, books, or tin boxes to generate height. Secondly, keep the decorative things collectively and do not spread them out in your home. So, an art collection of several paintings or a group of brass candle holders should be placed together. Thirdly, materials of the same color and kind should be put together as they look good. So, take care to combine metal with other metallic objects, ceramic with ceramic, glass with glass etc.
