How to Maintain Your Wall Fountain – Five Easy Steps

Wall fountains are ideal for maintaining humidity, removing allergens from the air and suppressing external noises. They are also an excellent tool to help you relax and rid yourself of the stresses that have built up throughout the day.

As well as providing all those benefits, a wall fountain can look pretty neat in your home or garden and make a great point of focus or gentle backdrop, depending how you use it.

For something so unique, with all its beauty and health benefits, it needs to be maintained to give you maximum efficiency. Here are some tips on how to maintain your wall fountain.

Get to know your wall fountain. This may seem obvious or even unnecessary considering the fact that it took less than one hour to install it. It was just a case of put it in position, add water and switch on, right?

Well, that’s true but just because it was easy to set up and you are already feeling the benefits of it, does not mean it should just be left to its own devices. It may take one or two days to really get to know your wall fountain. If the fountain came with a manual, I suggest taking some time to sit and relax by the fountain and read it.

Maintain the correct water level. Although the fountain has its own reservoir to store and circulate water from it will, over time, lose a certain amount to humidity. It will not take too long to figure out how much water is used in a day or week.

It is important that the water level remains at the recommended level and the pump is fully submerged to avoid damage to the pumps motor. The pump is located in the reservoir or the base of the fountain and must remain primed with water at all times.

Keep the wall fountain clean. It is beneficial to you to keep the bowl of the fountain clean. Aesthetically, a wall fountain bowl that is full of debris is not a pleasant site. Debris that is allowed to sit in a fountain can cause all sorts of problems.

Leaves that fall from neighboring trees if the wall fountain is outside, or from house plants if you have an indoor wall fountain, will clog the pump and cause it to malfunction or not function at all.  Debris in the water may also cause staining on the interior of the bowl.

Periodically change the water in the fountain. After a while it is often best to change out the water in your wall fountain and put fresh water in. I put fresh water in mine three times a year and winterize for three months.

Some wall fountain owners use distilled water because it does not contain any impurities. Adding distilled water to a large wall fountain may become costly, depending on the size of the fountain. An alternative is to use a water purification additive such as Protec which will remove impurities from the water.

Winterize your wall fountain. If you live in an area where temperatures drop below freezing (32f / 0 Celsius) and your wall fountain is outside in the garden or on the patio, it is advisable to turn off the power to the pump, remove the water from the fountain and drain the pump.

If your fountain is small enough to move, you may want to bring it in to the garage or shed. If it is too large or you want to leave it outside, you may want to consider covering it to protect it from the ravages of winter.

If you regularly maintain your wall fountain, it will last you for many years and you will reap its benefits. Click here for more information on wall fountains.
